ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
A person who writes a book about her hometown has many people to thank. My first thanks, though, must go to three people who have never set foot in Garden City. Rudolph Nelson, Eugene Garber, and Ted Jennings were the first readers of the manuscript. Their enthusiasm and curiosity fell like rain upon parched soilI thought Kansas the most local, least exotic place in the world. Their support and constructive criticism gave me the courage to explore familiar territory.
A number of people and institutions in Kansas provided valuable information and services. For the agricultural statistics and other factual information that appear in Chapters 1 and 11, I am grateful to Dr. Lawrent Buschman and the late Dr. Mark Hooker, both of the Southwest Kansas Branch Experiment Station; Marcella begnan, of Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Services; and the Kansas Water Office. For their help in locating photographs, I thank the Finney County Historical Society and Nancy Sherbert, Curator of Photographs for the Kansas State Historical Society. My editor, John N. Drayton, answered numerous questions and waited patiently during my long pauses of communication.
