Dedication

DedicationIn the period between the selection of our illustrious crew and the publication of this book, we had the misfortune to lose one of our valued contributors. Dr. Mark Feil succumbed to an extended illness just as the book was going to press. Mark was editor in chief of the Forensic Teacher Magazine as well as being a good friend. He will be missed.

Preface

I have a favorite word in the English language: previsualization. This single word kept me grounded as a forensic photographer for the last 40 years. It is the word which separates forensic photographers from everyone else on the planet who takes pictures, or snapshots, or portraits or weddings. The word is like a disease. The thing is, everyone else who takes photographs has it, but forensic photographers shouldn't. Isn't that an amazing concept?

The people who take photographs for work or play have some idea what their images are going to be once shown, printed, or distributed. They are meant to document a time and a place. They are meant to make people go, WOW, isn't that beautiful? Some folks give slide shows of trips to Europe to educate and impress their audiences with their singular knowledge of architecture and custom. But not forensic photographers.

The best of us are able to keep previsualization out of their work. They follow a protocol or best practice in order to collect a set of images showing, to the best of their ability, the scene and evidence from a crime or crash, and sometimes for the training of newer forensic photographers. The one thing making their images stand out is, they show the evidence and tell a story, but they are not previsualized and never planned in advance. Their images show a search for truth and document an incident without bias or prejudice.
