The Dasmariases, Early Governors of the Spanish Philippines
Building upon Dr Crossleys 2011 book (Hernando de los Ros Coronel and the Spanish Philippines in the Golden Age) this new work further expands our understanding of the Spanish Philippines by looking at Gmez Prez Dasmarias and his son Luis, successive governors from 1589. Drawing upon a rich selection of documents from the official Spanish archives (principally the Archivo General de Indias, Seville) and earlier histories, the book also utilizes an unpublished 628 page manuscript in the Lilly Library at Indiana University to provide many details not available elsewhere. In so doing the book reveals the complex situation that existed in the Philippines and how the two governors (and the people around them) threw out, and responded to, challenges from a variety of different cultures. Born into a rich family in north-western Spain about 1539, Gmez Prez Dasmarias had a distinguished career in Spain before being selected in 1588, to become the new governor of the Philippines. A devout Christian intent on converting the new country in which he found himself, Dasmarias epitomised the Spanish states increasing emphasis on its missionary role. He departed Spain with clear instructions from the king, which had been drawn up in response to requests from the Philippines, asking for a better governor and one of higher moral standards than they had previously enjoyed. From the evidence found in his sources, John Newsome Crossley argues that Dasmarias largely measured up to these requirements. Killed in an attempt to capture the fort at Ternate in the Moluccas in 1593, Gmez Prez Dasmarias was succeeded by his son Luis. After being replaced himself as governor in 1596, Luis remained in the Philippines until his death in the Chinese rebellion of 1603 in Manila. In revealing the story of the two Dasmarias governors, this book further illuminates the history of the Spanish Philippines and its relationship both with the wider Spanish empire, and the regional powers including China, Japan, Siam and Cambodia.
John Crossley began his latest career as a historian nearly twenty-five years ago. In 2011 he published Hernando de los Ros Coronel and the Spanish Philippines in the Golden Age (Ashgate), which has received excellent reviews. For many years before that he researched, lectured and taught mathematics at Oxford University, and then mathematics and computer science at Monash University, Australia. He started worked on the history of mathematics in the 1970s but from the 1990s has worked on Parisian music theory with Constant Mews and Carol Williams. About 2007 he started working on the early Spanish Philippines. He has published over 100 scholarly works including more than twenty books, and has successfully advised more than twenty PhD graduates. Now an Emeritus Professor at Monash University he is currently continuing with work on Parisian music theory but also on a translation of a previously unpublished history of the Philippines dating from around 1600, the Lilly Historia, which has provided many insights for this book.

The colonial history of the Philippines can be called one of the blind spots in history.1 This book is intended to shed light there. Like my earlier work this is concerned with people in that new colony: it is the story of a Spanish father and son, Gmez Prez and Luis Prez Dasmarias, who became governors of the new Spanish colony, the Philippines, near the end of the sixteenth centuryonly a quarter of a century after its capital, Manila, had been founded and their interactions with Spaniards and local people there. They were transported half a world away to bring Spanish and Catholic culture to a land of many cultures surrounded by even more, different, cultures. These cultures challenged, and were challenged by, each other.
