Modern Conspiracies in America: Separating Fact from Fiction: summary, description and annotation

America is awash with alleged conspiracies. It seems like today, no one with a cell phone escapes the vortex of skepticism, cynicism, paranoia, and fear that occupy our thoughts almost constantly. Seeking out valid answers in this cacophony can be confusing and deeply frustrating. In this book, historian Michael D. Gambone provides case studies of popular conspiracy theories in America from the past 100 years, from Protocol of the Elders of Zion to #stopthesteal. He offers an approach, based on basic logic and historical case studies, not designed to win arguments, but to help reads separate truth from the avalanche of nonsense descending on us every day. In each case, Gambone

  • Outlines the conspiracy claim
  • Provides historical context for the conspiracy
  • Presents evidence of the conspiracy claim
  • Analyzes the claim, context, and evidence

Modern Conspiracies in American History will appeal to a broad audience of readers interested in American history and those seeking to become better informed consumers of news in an era when social media spreads misinformation widely and quickly.

There are many people who deserve recognition for their help with this book. I want to thank Dr. Claire Hirshfield, who has been one of my most important mentors from the time that I was an undergraduate at Penn State University to the present day. She was and continues to be a constant source of inspiration and encouragement.

I would also like to thank the students who have enrolled in my Conspiracies and Modern American History course at Kutztown University. I started teaching it back in 2016 and have been impressed by our students curiosity and passion for the topic. I learned that almost all of them have a favorite conspiracy. More importantly, what we all learned was how best to understand conspiracies in a way that involved both evidence and civility. We busted another myth in the process, the one about this generation of college students being hypersensitive snowflakes incapable of reasonable discussion. That was not true by a long shot. Classes follow a healthy combination of common sense and collegiality. Being part of that process makes me much more optimistic about the future.

Many thanks to our staff at the Rohrbach Library, particularly Dawn Boody, who kept the pipeline of interlibrary loan material moving and, on more occasions than I probably remember, patiently dealt with overdue books.

As with all academic projects, my wife, Rachel, continues on as my first editor. If an idea combines common sense with evidence and clarity, she lets me know. If I dont quite cut the mustard, she has the loving candor refined over thirty years of marriage.

Lastly, I would like to thank Thalia, who was an undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh as I started work on the book. Her studies involve both political science and literary criticism, and she has applied that impressively sharp lens on her fathers work. I am raising a young person who has all the potential in the world and the work ethic to reach their goals. More than any parent could ask.
