To Dr. Susan Mann,
Thank you for believing in me.
Table of Contents
A fewyears back I set out on a trek to find myself. My travels hadtaken me to many places, and on one particular night, I foundmyself all alone, in a tent, high in the mountains of Montana. Ihadnt seen or talked to another human being in more than twoweeks.
Surrounded by the darkness of these lushgreen mountains, I was plunged into a solitude I had never feltbefore. Even my trusted friend, my diary, seemed to have turned herback on me. This was long before the days of smart phones, iPads, and Gameboys, and my futile attempts to distract myself were fornaught. I didnt know what to do. So I ran. I struck camp in thedead of night, hiked several hours back to the car, and drove formore hours, in a manic attempt to find another human being tointeract with. Anyone.
The ironic thing was that my trip hadactually been successful. I had indeed found myself. Now that I hadfound me, I had no idea what to do with him. I knew I was runningfrom myself, but had no further wisdom about what to do with my newfound friend.
Thats my story. This one is Leons.
I have known Leon for a number of years. I amnot sure I have ever met a man as insatiably curious as he: humble, bright, creative, delightful, engaging, adventurous, loving, caring, passionate, generous, fun loving, graced with a good doseof being willing to face the worlds dark energyas well as hisown. These are the adjectives I would use to describe his beautifulspirit.
Like all of us to some degree, Leon has beenon the eternal journey to answer lifes great questions: Who am I?Why am I here? Where am I going? What am I to believe? Whats thislife thing really all about? Whats the true nature of this humanexperience that I am subjected to? Is there a meaning beyond us? Isthe universe, indeed, a friendly place or not? (Albert Einstein hasbeen quoted as saying the answer to this specific question is themost important we will ever ponder.)
Most of us dont stray far from ourcomfortable lives to answer these questions. We may travel to seekthe answers, but not many of us as pilgrims or supplicants might, which is what Leon chose to do. His journey began with no food, nomoney, and not much of a plan.
Leon has had the good fortune to havetraveled the world as he has sought these answers and indulge inwhat many of us wish we could give ourselves permission to do. Hegives us the opportunity to go with him through this book, to giveus some ideas about what our options could be, if and when we mightrun into ourselves.
Find out what Leon did, and then askyourself, What would I have done?
This is a masterfully told story about a man, who, unlike me, didnt run.
Ted Klontz, co-author of Mind OverMoney, and The Financial Wisdom of Ebenezer Scrooge
Writing this book has most certainly notbeen a one man show. I have had plenty of help along the way. It ishere that I want to pay tribute to those who carried me on thisjourney toward becoming an author. Without the love and support ofmy family I would have struggled to dedicate my time to this book.I will always love my mother, father, and my three brothers George,Con, and Nick: One for all and all for one.
I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Dr. SusanMann, for it is her encouragement that showed a hopeless young kidthat he did indeed have value and could become whatever hewanted to be.
Angela, the safest person in my life. I willalways love you.
My grandmother whose love and affection Ihave always cherished. Thank you for loving me.
I owe a great deal to my publisher BettieYoungs for having enough confidence in and patience with this firsttime author. Without your support and guidance I wouldnt have thehonor of authoring this book. I promise to calm down for the nextone! Thanks also to the sensitive copy editing of ElisabethRinaldi, and for the design and layout by Jane Hagaman of
Quartet Books, and others from Betties staffwho had a hand in bringing this book to press.
