The Band
- The Rolling Stones were formed in London in 1962.
- The earliest members of the band were Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts.
- In the USA, the Stones have released 24 studio albums.
- They had eight consecutive number one albums, starting with Sticky Fingers in 1971.
- Their first gig was as The Rollin Stones and was on 12th July 1962 in The Marquee Club.
- The Stones were first signed by Decca Records. Decca had missed out on signing the Beatles, and because of this the boys got a great deal which included three times the royalty rate a band would have normally received!
- Their first single was a cover version of Come On by Chuck Berry. It was released on the 7th June 1963.
- In June 1964 The Stones began their first American Tour. It didnt go too well, and Dean Martin mocked their style and music when they appeared on his TV show.
- In the summer of 2012, the band celebrated their 50 year anniversary with the release of a special edition hardback book.
- The perennial rockers have been on fourty tours - a huge amount of time spent on the road!
Mick Jagger
- Mick was born on the 26th July 1943.
- He has been described as one of the most influential front men in the entire history of Rock & Roll.
- Mick has also had his own solo career - his first solo album was released in 1985.
- Jagger was knighted in 2003 - he is now known as Sir Michael Philip Jagger.
- Some fans criticised Jaggers acceptance of the honour, as he has always maintained an anti-establishment stance.
- Amongst other women, Jagger has been romatically associated with Marianne Faithfull, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Marsha Hunt, Janice Dickinson, Sophie Dahl, Angelina Jolie and Carla Bruni!
- Mick is a big fan of cricket, and once founded a media company just so he could get cricket coverage!
- It is estimated Jagger is worth $300 million.
- Andy Warhol once painted a series of portraits of Jagger, once of which was owned by the Shah of Iran and hung in the Royal Palace in Tehran.
- Many artists - including David Bowie and Lenny Kravitz - have cited Jagger as one of their key influences in music.
Brian Jones
- Brian was born on the 28th February 1942.
- He sadly died on the 3 rd July 1969, aged just 27.
- As a child, Brian was twice suspended from school.
- In his short life, Brian had a total of six children!
- As Brian and the Stones became more and more accomplished, he tended to prefer Gibson guitars, including Firebirds, ES-330s and Les Pauls.
- He played the Sitar on one of the Stones most famous tracks, Paint it Black .
- In addition to the Guitar, Brian was an accomplished Harmonica player, and can be heard on many of their early tracks.
- On the 10th May 1967, Brian was arrested for drugs possession - the police found marijuana, cocaine and methamphemtamine in his flat. He was arrested again in May 1968.
- In June 1969, the other members of the band visited Brian and told him that they no longer required his services...
- And sadly, on the night of the 2 nd July, he was discovered dead at the bottom of his swimming pool.

Keith Richards
- Keith was born on the 18th December 1943.
- Rolling Stone magazine have credited Keith with creating rocks greatest single body of riffs.
- Keith was expelled from Dartford Technical High School for truancy.
- Richards has stated that Chuck Berry had an enourmous influence on him.
- Keith has sung backing vocals on every single Stones album.
- The songwriting partnership of Richards and Jagger is often compared to that of Lennon and McCartney from rival band The Beatles .
- Keith has a collection of over 3,000 guitars.
- Keith has endured a reputation of a hard drug user since the late sixties, having been tried on drugs charges no less than five times. He has of course been clean for a long time - he has found it hard to rid himself of the image of a junkie.
- Columnist Peter Hitchens once described Richards as a capering streak of living gristle who ought to be exhibited as a warning to the young of what drugs can do to you even if youre lucky enough not to choke on your own vomit.
- in 2006, Keith had cranial surgery after falling out of a tree in Fiji.
Charlie Watts
- Charlie was born on the 2 nd June 1941.
- He was given his first drumkit by his parents in 1955.
- Charlie prefers to use Gretsch drums, although uses a variety of brands of cymbal.
- As an avid jazz fan, Charlie first practised the drums by playing along to his jazz record collection.
- Charlie gave up a career as a graphic designer to join a range of bands (and eventually the Stones).
- He often contributed artwork to the bands albums.
- Keith Richards and Mick Jagger have often credited Charlie as being the key member of the band.
- Allegedly, in the 1980s, Mick Jagger (drunk at the time) phoned Charlies hotel room in the middle on the night, asking Wheres My Drummer. It is rumoured that Charlie got up, shaved, put a suit on (including a formal tie and freshly shined shoes). He then descended the stairs to where Jagger was, punched him in the face and said Dont ever call me your drummer again. Youre my fucking singer!
- The Telegraph have named Charlie as one of the worlds best-dressed men.
- Charlie is a member of the Modern Drummer hall of fame, along with Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and a host of other amazing percussionists.
