Preface to First Edition
We have attempted to survey, selectively, the critical literature on contemporary British and American novels. Generally, selections are from journals and books representing literary scholarship rather than from book reviews. There are exceptions, however, because of our own judgment of the unusual quality of a review, the similar judgment of an authority on an individual writer, or, simply, a lack of other critical material.
Novelists are included if they wrote after 1945 (such as Joseph Heller), if they wrote before 1945 but achieved their most significant recognition after 1945 (such as Henry Roth and William Faulkner), or if they wrote before 1945 but continued with major publications after 1945. This last criterion included writers such as Hemingway and excludes such as Maugham. Once a writer qualified, all his or her work (before and after 1945) for which critiques could be found was included. Some anthologies analyzed included essays or articles originally written before 1945. These have been accepted when the book fell within our period of concern.
The cut-off date on material examined is 1968 for periodicals and 1969 for books. The time lag to publication is accounted for by the fact that every article was examined, except those obviously discussing a specific novel or those few cited as "Not seen." Those pages of articles or books dealing with a specific novel were then listed under that novel. For this reason page references herein are often to a portion of a book chapter or to part of an article rather than to the chapter or article in its entirety.
