Despite all the lip service paid to diversity in the workplace, most women, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos, gays, disabled, and older workers are still struggling to overcome the barrier of difference blocking their careers. Its a hard reality, but not a good reason for them to quit trying. Instead, the authors of the acclaimed Voices of Diversity advocate a better, more effective strategy for advancing their careers--without sacrificing their identities or dignity. Based on extensive research and firsthand interviews, and loaded with real-life workplace scenarios and success stories, FROM THE OUTSIDE IN explains how to: * break past assumptions of hostility * muster support * accentuate the positive * buy in without selling out--and more proven strategies for breaking through the concrete ceiling and enjoying a successful career.

Acknowledgments
The impetus for this book was the positive response to Voices of Diversity, written by two of the current authors, Renee Blank and Sandra Slipp. Lectures, training seminars, and book reviews indicated that there was a broad audience for a follow-up book with an emphasis on what members of the diverse workforce could do for themselves to succeed in the workplace. To all those people, known and unknown to us by name, we give our sincere thanks.
In addition, special mention must be made of Jackie Gates, Jean Lee, Heidi Weissman, Walter Vertreace, and Julio Rodriguez for the invaluable information and numerous resources they provided.
For his generous assistance on the book, both in content and format, we are truly grateful to Robert Blank. Thanks, too, to Judith Seto, Samuel Slipp, and Paul Aron for their important insights and advice.
The staff at AMACOM was, as usual, a pleasure to work with. Our sincere thanks to Ellen Kadin, our acquisitions editor, and our agent, Ed Knappman, for their support and understanding.
Hundreds of interviewees, anonymous in the book, and six named "luminaries" were generous enough to tell us their own stories. We are truly grateful to all of them for their enthusiastic willingness to tell us how they moved from "the outside in." This is their book, and we trust that it faithfully reflects their insights, feelings, and hopes for those who will follow their lead.
