A MANAGERS GUIDE TO WIRELESS TELECOMMUNICATIONS We all know about cellular phones, pagers, and cordless phones, but what exactly is wireless data, a wireless local area network (LAN) and mobile computing? Most managers have experience with some of these technologies, but if they want to make intelligent business decisions, they need to get up to speed on the wireless world. Marketers need this information to make shrewd decisions about developing new products and how to deliver those products. Other managers need to keep their in-house telecommunication system current. For either need, this book provides: ** a brief history of the emergence of wireless communications-and an outlook for near and long-term developments in this fascinating area ** an explanation of the key applications of wireless, including mobile communications satellite services ** highlights of U.S. telecommunications policies and their impact on wireless ** a guide to current FCC spectrum allocation issues ** a detailed glossary of terms, including industry acronyms. RON SCHNEIDERMAN (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ) is and expert on wireless technology and editor of Wireless Systems Design Magazine. Previously he was New York Bureau Chief of Electronics Magazine. He is the author of Future Talk.

Prologue
For most business professionals, the thought of being at work means being at a desk in an office. That's changing, and rapidly, as business professionals have become more mobile and spend more time away from their offices.
One-third of the U.S. workforce, or about 43 million Americans, are now mobile, spending at least 20 percent of their time away from their primary workplace. These numbers are expected to increase as more companies, driven by simple economics and the demands of competition, push more of their workers out into the field and abolish fixed office space.
This trend certainly bodes well for vendors of wireless communications equipment or services, especially when you consider that twenty cents out of every dollar in revenue generated by telecommunications service providers comes from wireless communications. IBM Corp. believes that by the year 2008, that figure will climb to eighty cents.
Most businesspeople already carry a cellular phone or a pager (sometimes both) and may regularly use a laptop computer and a personal information device of some type. The technology in these devices is advancing so fast that the functionality that used to be available in separate products can now be integrated into a single product, even as products become smaller and lighter. Multifunctional products

that are part cellular phone (voice), part handheld personal computer (data), and part portable navigation system (position-location) are fast emerging.
As business users account for a growing share of more broad-based wireless service users, wireless service providers will develop more new products and services for the business/professional market. Enterprise wireless communicationsthe wireless office, in-building cellular, the wireless PBXwill become critical elements in boosting the productivity of every business, including small offices and even home offices.
