Michelle, since we both worked for the same company, though in different departments, I could only observe your management style from afar. I heard employee after employee praise you for various things you did, how you respected differing opinions and styles, and how you made everyone feel important to the team. In my department, I.T., I had some of the best and worst managers of my life, and after reading this manual, it was easy to see the qualities in the best manager Ive ever had its like she read your manual years before you wrote it. I had to deal with being a woman in I.T. (one strike) and a black woman in I.T. (two strikes), which often left me being on the defensive, usually with an insecure white, male boss who felt that management by intimidation was the way to go. Everything they could have done to empower me, our team, was dismissed. They projected fear because inside, they were truly terrified. And then comes your manual. Amanda was clearly intimidated, overwhelmed, doubted herself, but rather than reveling in the fear, she reached out, asked for help and not only found her voice but found the best way to inspire her team. Every manager Ive ever had who did this created an incredible team where we enjoyed working with one another and were happy to go above and beyond what was called for, to help the company.
What you have here is the secret to success for any manager who knows he or she can do better, but doesnt know where to start. Oh, how Id love to send this book to all those awful managers Ive had along the way. This book is perfection. Real-life examples, written in a way anyone can understand, and youve spelled out the true benefits of teams, where each member is an integral part, respected, inspired, acknowledged, or just content to be a support person.
