I am the co-founder of a university spin-out, developing a new therapeutic. I am the proprietor of an online store, trading across Europe. I am the CTO of a manufacturing SME, forecasting sales of 5.6M in 2019.
So what? I hear you ask.
We have exclusive access to our markets, enabled by our intellectual property rights.
Now you are listening.
Intellectual property (IP) is already pivotal to your business: whether expanding into new territories, moving into new markets or launching new products, your intellectual property rights (IPRs) must work harder for you than the IPRs of your competitors work against you. So when you are investing in your business or seeking investment from others you need to not only secure your IP but also leverage it to your advantage. Defend what you are doing, to maintain and grow your position. Protect what you want to do, to build a monopoly. Attack where required, to clear a path forwards. Your IPRs support your strategy and your strategy may even be founded on them. If they dont, what are they doing?
But how do you transform your innovation, whether a brand, a service or a product, into an IPR of value? And how do you profit from your IPR? This book answers not only these questions but also the questions about IPRs that you didnt even know you had to ask.
The book builds on the essential framework for the process of innovation developed in the first edition. Authoritatively and comprehensively rewritten by practitioners focussed on nurturing enterprise, your journey is guided through strategic decision-making, tactical implementations and clear practical advice.
examines innovation for tomorrow, including applying artificial intelligence (AI), accelerating access to R&D and feeding Chinas innovation. To be part of innovation tomorrow, you must be part of it today.
explores management of IP, from disputes to taxation, via R&D tax credits and the UK Patent Box. Make your investment in IPRs self-sustaining and profit from your IPRs.
focusses on IP opportunities: new drivers and trends, evolving landscapes and where to start for a start-up. Emerging technologies disrupt markets but even established IPRs remain just as relevant. So when you look forwards, think beyond.
stimulates mutual growth through networks and collaborations: with universities, with industry, with agile SMEs and with symbiotic partners. When speed to market is determinative but you lack the essential resources whether finance or even ideas join forces for a win-win.
Make more from what you have and keep more of what you have got or your competitors will. This book tells you how.

Scarcely a day goes past when either of the words innovation or entrepreneurship dont find themselves part of a headline news article, especially in the context of spin-out or University-based research. This stems from an exponential increase in the urge for academic innovators (and by academic I mean from undergraduate to Professor) to make their mark in the world of business, along with an increasing acceptance from industry that the new ideas are no longer the exclusive domain of their own R&D departments.
There is a view that these are two orthogonal environments which struggle to work well together in a seamless way; in my opinion, much of this is in fact down to perception rather than reality, and the best way to dispel this is by education and communication.
In this context, I am delighted therefore to welcome a second edition of this excellent guide which addresses not only the fast-moving technological and commercial space which innovation inhabits, but also the latest developments in the supporting legal framework, namely Intellectual Property (IP).
As an IP practitioner first in industry and now in academia, I know only too well what a difficult path it is to get an idea to business fruition, and looking at the contents of this new edition I can see it will help disentangle the interwoven strands of technical, legal and commercial challenges.
Quite rightly, the daunting topic of AI serves as an overture to a theme-packed and yet concisely constructed symphony of highly pertinent topics, each authored by an expert in the field. Articles on topics as diverse as Trolls, Innovation in China, issues around tax credits (and of course, GDPR) rub shoulders with provocative titles on what patents are really for, and how best to manage them.
I believe passionately in the need to educate everyone who is a part of this exciting entrepreneurship ecosystem in the multifarious aspects that are essential to their progress, and this guide serves as an excellent starter in that direction.
