DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to my long-term colleagues at Plymouth State College. As I approach my twentieth year on this beautiful campus, I want to express my deep gratitude for the pleasure of working alongside Steve Bamford, Diane Brandon, Gene Fahey, Michael Fischler, Dick and Pat Hage, Tim Keefe, Jim McLaughlin, Merryl Reichbach and Bob Tuvesonmy colleagues in the division of Student Affairs.
Writing this book, with its emphasis on the sociologist's fascination with how people and organizations function, has renewed my appreciation for the fine group of colleagues I have an opportunity to work with day in and day out on my campus.

INTRODUCTION THE PROMISE OF A DEGREE IN SOCIOLOGY
As a busy career counselor, I talk with many sociology majors throughout the year. In fact, at my school and many other colleges and universities, the number of declared sociology majors and related social science degrees is rapidly increasing. The students I meet and talk with love their major and many describe sociology as a "perfect fit" with who they are and what they want to learn. Most discover sociology in college and are surprised and delighted to find a major that so closely focuses on their curiosity about people.
