As of January 2020, the business world went fully digital

Zoom, a popular online meeting software, saw its stock explode overnight.

With the outbreak of Covid-19, brick and mortar businesses realized the importance of having online deliverables and even more important, a way to connect and engage with their audience and customers.

On the other hand, traditional online businesses have been unknowingly preparing for this day for a few decades. Where many businesses saw a decline in revenue, many education-based, online businesses experienced record growth.

Whether it was new subscribers, courses, or program sales, the world, especially the western world, sat home with not much more to do than uplevel their skills and knowledge. And what better way to do that than home-based learning.

There are many types of online businesses such as eCommerce, blogs, and sites that sell digital programs and courses. But one type has stood the test of time and has been the champion of stable online income: membership sites.

Heres why membership sites are some of the most stable and reliable income you can put in place. You see, the point of a business is NOT just to make sales. Its to create customers. And the difference is that a sale only happens one time. A customer, if set up correctly and treated well, will pay you month after month after month. Sometimes for a lifetime.

And this is what I love about membership sites. Membership sites are about securing customers. Membership sites are founded on recurring income because we create a community of like-minded people who gain value and enjoy our content.

Even better, your own membership site is like having a rental property but never having to fix a toilet. For example, rental property can have a cash flow of, lets say, $500 a month. But you have to find and invest in that property. Then you turn around and fix up that property, find a tenant for that property, maintain that property and pay taxes on that property. Plus if the tenants dont pay, you might have to evict them and start all over with a new one while missing out on a few months cash flow.

Now, think about a membership site where you only have 5 or 6 customers who pay you $100 a month. Theres no property to buy, no tenants to evict, and no toilets to fix. But you net the same dollar amount month after month because memberships have VERY little overhead aside from customer acquisitionwhich in some cases can be done with free Google traffic. Want to give yourself a raise? Add a few more customers to your membership site every month.

Now you might say, But the real estate will appreciate over time It may, but so do membership sites. And you still wont have to fix broken toilets in the middle of the night.

You see, its not uncommon for membership sites, when done correctly, to increase in value over time. And they can even be bought for high six and even seven or eight figures by larger companies. For example, United Airlines recently bought an online school for pilots for an undisclosed amount. What kind of online school was it? You guessed it. It was nothing more than an online membership site.

Sure, companies may buy membership sites because they cash flow, but this is just a bonus to them. What theyre really buying is the database of people who have raised their hands to be a part of that unique community.

When you start a membership site yes, youre starting a business. Yes, youre starting a community. And just as importantly youre also creating an asset that can not only pay you for a lifetime, but it can also be a business you can consider being acquired down the road.

Now, not everyone will want to sell their membership site for millions, but a few may. Many will be happy to build it and make an extra $10k a year. Some $100k a year. And a few even $1mm a year. There is no wrong or right answer. But the way I see it, if I never planted the seed, the tree would never have grown.
