If you have some money left over after you have paid for all your basic expenses

each week or month, you can think about saving your money. Saving becomes extremely important when you are an adult, and learning about s aving now will prepare you for the future. There are many different ways you can save your money. It pays to find out about all of them, so you can choose whic h ones are right for you.

IMPORT AN T QUESTION S

When deciding where to save your money, you need to think about some important questions. How often will you need to access your money to t ake out some? How long can you afford to put away your money? Are you comfortable with taking a little risk with your money? That means you might lose some or even all of it, but you might also see it grow more than in other savings. Fo r many people, putting some of their savings into investments is a smart idea. Investments are a riskier c hoice for your money , but they can turn out to be more rewarding, too.

Figure o ut how much money yo u can affor d to invest, after y ou have paid for all your basic expenses.

LONG- TE RM SA VI NG

The main thing about investments is that they are for the long term. T his is not money you need today. It is not even money you may need next month, or next year, or for emergencies. This is money you can afford to forget about for at least 5 years i deally, 10 or even more. The great thing about being young is that you have time on your side. If you start learning about investments now, you are giving your money the very best chance to grow by the time you will need it.

LEARN ABOUT THE W ORLD

W hen you invest your money , you become involved in the real world. Y ou are putting your money into real businesses. Y our money increases in value as the businesses do well, and you lose money if they fail. There are many reasons why businesses do well or fail. Some are to do with the business itself. Others are more to do with the economy . That is how the country a nd the world i s doing financially . W hen your money is tied up in businesses, you can follow their progress and learn about what is going on out there.

Investing is a lo ngterm plan. Y ou ar e putting money away to meet your goals many years fro m now.

Saving in investments is d iffere nt fro m saving in a savings acco unt your money does not earn interes t . It gro ws in value if the businesses you inves t in gro w in value.

WHAT ARE ST OC KS One of the most popular kinds of investment is buying - photo 8

WHAT ARE ST OC KS?

One of the most popular kinds of investment is buying stocks . Wh en you buy a stock, you are buying a small share, or part, of a business. P eople who hold stocks in a business are called stoc kholders or shareholders. Y o u buy a stock hoping that the business will do well, so that the stoc k s value increases. Y our investment is then worth more.

WHY SELL ST OC KS?

The main reason businesses sell stoc ks to investors is to raise money to spend on their business. If they want to expand into making new products or selling products in new places, they need money to pay for new machines and materials and to employ more people. They decide to sell shares in the business, and with the money they raise, they build up the business and make it bigger and more valuable.

Once a business has sold some of its stocks to the public, it must report bac k to them on how the business is doing. The company cannot just take your money and disappear with it. Y o u, the stockholder , h ave a right to know what the business is doing. Y ou also have a right to s ay what you think the business should be doing. Each year , t he business holds a public meeting where investors are told about new plans. The business asks the investors to vote on their plans, hoping they will approve them. If the stockholders object to the plans, they can group together and vote against them.

DIVIDENDS

When you buy stocks in a business, you hope they will grow in value over a long period of time. There is another way to benefit from this kind of investment, though. That is from dividends . Dividends are a regular payment that businesses making a profit pay to their stockholders. T hey are shares of the profit. Dividends are paid every few months. Many people choose to invest in businesses that pay high dividends because these give them a regular income. They are especially useful for people who are not working, or have retired .
