Halloween
Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31 each year.
For most people it is not a religious festival, but the date of
Halloween is connected to the Christian calendar. November 1 is a
Christian holy day called All Saints Day , also known as All Hallows Day.
This is a day for remembering the dead, including the saints . The evening
before this day was known as All Hallows Eve , and over time this became
shortened to Halloween. It is a day for remembering spirits , who come
back from the dead to wander the world on this night. On Halloween,
people dress up in scary costumes to remember these spirits, magic,
and the dead. They dress as ghosts, skeletons, vampires , and witches.
Boo!
Many people spend the days before
Halloween carving pumpkins. Once
the esh is scooped out, candles
are lit inside to give a lovely glow.
Celebrating Halloween
Black and orange are the colors of Halloween.
Black is used because the celebrations take
place at night, in the dark. Orange is the color
of the harvest and fall. Orange pumpkins are
carved into jack-o-lanterns and put outside
to scare away evil spirits.
In this book you will nd out how to make
some wonderful origami pieces that will make
Halloween even more fun and festive!
Valley fold: To make
a valley fold, fold the
paper toward you.
Mountain fold: To
make a mountain fold,
fold the paper away
from you.

Witches and Ghosts
The costumes people wear for Halloween are all
about being scary. People have always thought that
witches and wizards have the power to contact the
spirit world, the world of the dead. This is why they
are also popular costumes for Halloween.
In stories, witches
wear black pointed
hats and y through the
night on broomsticks.
Witches in History
Hundreds of years ago, witches were not
the old women in pointy black hats that
we dress up as today. They were women in
the community who had learned how to
make useful medicines and healing lotions
from herbs and other plants. They had
a special knowledge that other people
did not have. The Christian Church was
worried about their powers, because they
said that healing could come only from
God. They said witches were devils, and
they punished them, often by killing them.
Witches were hunted down, so they had
to hide away and do their work in secret.
Over time, witches came to be shown as
ugly, because evil was seen as ugly.
Returning from the Dead
The ghosts of Halloween are the spirits of the dead
returning to our world. At Halloween, they do not rest in
peace. Haunted houses are a popular attraction at Halloween.
They are decorated with ghouls and monsters, cobwebs, lighting
effects, and things that go bump in the night, to frighten us.
