Preface

I WAS INSPIRED TO WRITE THIS BOOK BECAUSE I WANTED to assist talented people in their search for satisfying employment in the life sciences industry. Since academia generally does not prepare individuals for careers in industry, this book aims to serve as a resource for making the transitiona transition that I myself have made. Given the complexity and large variety of careers available, my intent is to help job seekers make meaningful and informed decisions about their careers and to provide enough information to enable them to find the job that best utilizes their natural capabilities, educational backgrounds, and interests.

The material for this book was generated from interviews with more than 200 biotechnology and pharmaceutical executives, many of whom work at the vice president level. These contributors graciously and generously shared information about their career paths and the fields that they had choseninformation that some wished had been available before they finally found their career niche.

While you are reading, keep in mind that although every effort has been made to be comprehensive and accurate, the biotechnology and drug development industry is large, and details will vary from company to company. In addition, the perceptions of each interviewee will differ, based on his or her personal experiences. To obtain a refined, well-rounded perspective containing alternative viewpoints, an average of ten people were interviewed for each chapter.

This book describes in detail a wide variety of careers in biotechnology and drug development. Each of the main chapters presents a different career area, with descriptions of the different types of jobs and their day-to-day responsibilities, insights into the pros and cons of the job and what it takes to be successful, practical tips for obtaining employment, and much more. A resource guide is included at the end of each chapter. In addition, several introductory chapters provide guidance about resumes, job searches, and informational interviewing. The highlighted points of interest that appear alongside the text throughout the chapters were derived from the interviews. The book is written in a format that allows easy scanning, so that you can quickly find relevant information about the particular jobs in which you are interested.

I wish each of you great success in your career. May it be enjoyable and productive, because we vitally need more individuals to help discover and develop new products for the many serious and chronic illnesses that still remain without adequate medical treatment options.
