About the Authors

Paul Sparrow is the director of the Centre for Performance-Led HR and Professor of International Human Resource Management at Lancaster University Management School. He has worked as a Research Fellow at Aston University, Senior Research Fellow at Warwick University, Consultant/Principal Consultant at PA Consulting Group, Reader/Professor at Sheffield University and, whilst at Manchester Business School he took up the Ford Chair from 2002 to 2004 and was Director, Executive Education 20022005. He has consulted with major multinationals, public sector organizations and, intergovernmental agencies and was an Expert Advisory Panel member to the UK Governments Sector Skills Development Agency. His research interests include cross-cultural and international HRM, HR strategy, cognition at work, and changes in the employment relationship. He is on the Editorial Boards of a number of leading HR journals and has published over 100 journal articles and chapters and several books. In 2009 he was voted amongst the Top 15 Most Influential HR Thinkers by Human Resources Magazine.

Martin Hird is Executive Director at the Centre for Performance-led HR. Martin has held a range of managerial and educational roles. Following graduation and initial employment with the Dunlop Group he entered higher education becoming Dean of the Business School at Humberside Polytechnic whilst also operating an OD/Development consultancy. From 1988 to 2005 he worked for BAE Systems, McLaren Group, and Royal Mail in a series of HR Director roles which included responsibility for senior-level talent management and leadership development. He is a Fellow at the Centre for Leadership Studies at Exeter University. In addition to research and teaching within the Centre, his role focuses on client liaison and responding to business development opportunities. Martin has had a number of books, articles, and white papers published in recent years with particular emphasis on HR Delivery Systems and Talent Management.

Dr Anthony Hesketh is Senior Lecturer in the Management School at Lancaster University. His research focuses on capturing the impact of people and strategy on organizational performance. Anthony researches and consults with some of the worlds leading organizations on strategic human capital management and its measurement, and outsourcing. Recent books include The Mismanagement of Talent (2004) and, with Steve Fleetwood, Understanding the Performance of HR (2009). He is the deputy director of the Centre for Performance-Led HR at Lancaster, a founding member of the HROA Europe Board, and for which he heads the Research & Publications Committee. Anthony regularly speaks at international conferences and sits on a number of advisory boards in the HR space and is Editor of the Human Resources Business Review (HRBR) and sits on the editorial board of The HR Director.

Cary Cooper is Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health, Lancaster University Management School and Pro Vice Chancellor (External Relations) at Lancaster University. He is the author of over 100 books (on occupational stress, women at work, and industrial and organizational psychology), has written over 400 scholarly articles, and is a frequent contributor to national newspapers, TV, and radio. He is a Fellow of the British Academy of Management and also of the Academy of Management (having also won the 1998 Distinguished Service Award). In 2001 he was awarded a CBE in the Queens Birthday Honours List for his contribution to organizational health. He is Chair of The Sunningdale Institute, a think tank on management/organizational issues, in the National School of Government. He was also the lead scientist to the UK Government Office for Science on their Foresight programme on Mental Capital and Well Being (20072008), and was appointed a member of the expert group on establishing guidance for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence on promoting mental well-being through productive and healthy working conditions, 2009. He is Chair of the United Kingdoms Academy of Social Sciences. Professor Cooper is also the President of the Institute of Welfare, President of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, a national Ambassador of The Samaritans, a Patron of the Anxiety UK, and Patron of the National Bullying Helpline. HR Magazine named him the 6th Most Influential Thinker in HR in 2009.
