Chapter 1
REDEFINING SUCCESS
Before I tell you what the Seven Keys are,we need to get into the right mind set. You need to believe that itis possible to achieve ambitious goals.
So let me tell you a story.
At the 2012 Olympics the British cyclingteam won seven Gold medals out of the ten track cycling events,equalling their performance from Beijing four years earlier anddenying the top spot to other successful cycling nations such asFrance, the Netherlands and the USA.
Their impressive performance, for thesecond Games in a row, lead to accusations of cheating. A headlinein a French paper even suggested that the British had magicwheels!
The reality was just as excitingand asinnovative!
The British had excellent facilities,strong training programmes and very talented athletes, to be sure.But so did the other top nations. What the British had that no oneelse did was a top-secret programme to eke out small improvementsin performance wherever possible.
It was called Marginal Gains and it wasbased on the idea that if the British cyclists could be faster,even by a tiny amount, in many different areas, the overall impactwould be significant.
Some of the measures the team implementedwere low-tech, such as avoiding the courtesy buses to protectagainst infection, or taking their favourite pillow to competitionsto ensure a good nights sleep.
Other strategies had a more direct impacton performance. For example, tyres were sprayed with alcohol toremove dust and thus increase friction for the start of therace.
Then there was Project Golden Hour, ascheme to maximise athletes recovery during the hour between thesemi-final and the final, which lead to the development of heatedshorts to keep muscles warm after exercise.
