Foreword

Theres a time to think, a time to act, and a time to celebrate. Now is a moment to celebrate, because you started reading the outcome of two years of hard work, full of thinking and acting, and Im happy to play a small role as the master of ceremonies at this celebration.

Eleven years ago, I met Jurgen at a birthday party of a mutual friend, and it was clear to me he was good at thinking, not so much at partying. Having a weak spot for bright people, I hired him as a Development Manager at my business, ISM eCompany. Some time later, we updated his job title to Chief Information Officer, a role in which he could do anything he wanted, as long as he helped keep developers happy, customers excited, and the business profitable.

It isnt always easy, leading an organization; in fact, it rarely is. Clients cannot describe precisely what they want, but they know they want it fast. Employees have no idea how to make better decisions, but they know they want less work and more money. And managers? It sometimes seems the best a manager can hope for is to balance dissatisfaction equally among all stakeholders.
