As a prostate cancer survivor and former proton patient, I find Bob Marckinis book to be the best source of information available to men who are at risk of prostate cancer, or have been diagnosed with this disease. There are lots of books out there, but none like this one. Its a straight shooting, nuts and bolts guide for ensuring you are properly diagnosed and understand the risks and benefits of treatment alternatives.
~Ken Venturi, Golf Professional and TV Personality
It is a pleasure for me to give my unqualified endorsement to this comprehensive and truly interesting story by Robert Marckini. It should be read by every man who is diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer in the early stages is highly treatable and can be cured. I am a senior cancer research scientist, pathologist and academic physician who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002 and was treated with proton beam therapy at Loma Linda Medical Center. Prior to treatment, I went through the same deductive reasoning that Mr. Marckini outlines in his book and came to the conclusion that proton therapy would be effective for my treatment. Mr. Marckini has written his book with candor, warmth, clarity and insight. It will be a great asset to patients diagnosed with prostate cancer and who are trying to decide on what type of treatment to choose. I highly recommend it to anyone who is diagnosed with prostate cancer.
~H. Terry Wepsic, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Pathology, University of California, Irvine, CA. Research Professor at Long Beach V.A. Healthcare System, Long Beach, CA
"If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, this is the one book you must buy. It explains all your treatment options from the patient's point of view. When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I read dozens of books on treatment - this book is by far the best of all."
~John Raynolds, Wayzata, MN, Cancer Survivor and former CEO of Outward Bound USA
"A landmark of a book. A provocative, intricate and intelligent study of proton therapy. A book to be recommended!"
~Ambassador Joseph Verner Reed, Greenwich, CT, Under-Secretary General, United Nations
Bob Marckinis book was not only a crucial information tool, but it also blended the right amount of humor, background and fact. The author was able to deal with the serious nature of this issue, while never losing perspective of the rest of our lives. This book does an outstanding job of anticipating the questions that I and all new patients want answered.
~Jack Holt, Marblehead, MA, former CEO ACNielsen
Robert Marckini was told that he was an ideal candidate, even a poster boy, for each of three standard prostate cancer treatments, depending on the specialist at hand. His account of the resulting quandary typifies the wit and wisdom that fill You Can Beat Prostate Cancer! a book that any new prostate cancer patient will profit from reading. His choice, proton beam therapy, an excellent method with a solid track record, has been short-changed in the past because of ignorance and provincialism. Marckinis efforts are fortunately helping to change this situation.
~Herbert A. Klein, M.D., Ph.D., Pittsburgh, PA, Clinical Professor of Radiology University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
You dont need to read dozens of books, search the Internet, or interview hundreds of doctors and former patients. Bob Marckini has done it for you. If you have prostate cancer and are scared and confused, this is the book for you. I am a ten-year prostate cancer survivor. My experiences are comparable to those described by Marckini. I became frustrated and exhausted after hearing conflicting opinions from many different sources. Bob is an engineer with a brilliant scientific mind, which motivates him to investigate and understand how things work. This comes out in his book as he explains the details of each treatment alternative. Read this book. Youll need nothing else.
~Judge William M. Auslen, Carlsbad, CA
"This book, together with the author's website (www.protonbob.com), is a complete, user-friendly guide on what to do if you have prostate cancer, but want to avoid radical surgery. I am a satisfied Loma Linda cancer patient who struggled with what to do about it. I needed a book like this at that time, and we should thank Bob Marckini for filling that need."
~Doug Ayer, Greenwich, CT, Venture Capitalist
Marckini has produced an exceptional work in sharing the trauma and the resulting journey associated with hearing the words, you have cancer! In a warm and convincing manner he conveys his personal search for a 21st Century non-invasive treatment modality for his disease. His journey ends in finding hope, healing, health, happiness and wholeness. It is a must read for anyone confronted with cancer.
~J. Lynn Martell, D.Min., Banning, CA, Special Assistant to the President of Loma Linda University and Medical Center
I do not have prostate cancer, but I found this book to be a wonderful resource. Marckinis no-nonsense approach to health management was an eye opener for me. This book made me more aware of my responsibility for managing my own health.
~Edmund Butler, Mattapoisett, MA, Vice President (retired) Verizon, Corporation
Do women have to worry about prostate cancer? Yes, they do! If there is a father, brother, husband, or a son, there may be a day where the issue of prostate cancer arises. This book should be of interest to anyone regardless of gender, who has been or will be touched by this disease. It provides the reader with a wonderful, thorough and compassionate orientation to find his or her way to the right decision for successful prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment.
~Arnd Hallmeyer, MD, Berlin, Germany, Prostate Cancer Survivor, pretreatment PSA 436
Marckini has put together in this fine book the best of scholarship and deep concern for people. He writes with passion and the result is a book that should be in the hands of every man. I have two sons and will see to it that they have it. It is gratifying to see how proton therapy is making its way, sometimes against headwinds, toward full acceptance in the medical community. I was a member of the Loma Linda board when the decision was made to take the plunge, and now I am a graduate of the program. There was never any question about my going proton, and there could be no finer protagonist than Robert Marckini. I salute him.
