The niche bestseller Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery begins with the shooting of a urologist and includes a World War II Battle. The book exposes the big lie about radical prostate surgery, is filled with cartoons and simple diagrams, and is written for the average layperson in easy-to-understand style. The author, Bradley Hennenfent, M.D., has known many men who suffered from prostate cancer and his book includes many uplifting stories about less harmful treatments than surgery. Dr. Hennenfent also explains the problem of lies, damn lies, and prostate cancer statistics. The adverse effects of surgery: impotence, sexual dysfunction, incontinence, and urethral strictures are explained in realistic fashion.Urologist W. Reid Pitts, Jr., M.D., FACS, wrote an outstanding letter-to-the-editor of the Journal of Urology lambasting the radical prostatectomy. When interviewed for Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery, Dr. Pitts said: Although I did the first ever nerve sparing radical prostatectomy at New York-Cornell Hospital, Ive abandoned the radical prostatectomy for my prostate cancer patients. There is always a better treatment option. Two randomized, controlled studies suggest that about 90% of all prostate cancer surgery done to date has failed to extend the life of the patient, says Dr. Bradley Hennenfent M.D., the books author, who adds, This will be news to most men.Surgery should not be advertised as a cure-all for prostate cancer, says Dr. Hennenfent, although surgery does increase the lifespan of about 10% of highly selected patients, and improvements in surgery are constantly being developed. My book details the harm done by surgery, while explaining the pros and cons of watchful waiting, active surveillance, noninvasive therapy, radiation seed implants, three-dimensional radiation therapy, herbal medications, cryosurgery, and hormone blockade.

Quotes
You may not be able to change the world, but at least you can embarrass the guilty Jessica Mitford (1917 1996), author of The American Way of Death .
Finally the TRUTH will be told! It's been so frustrating seeing what the urology profession is getting away with and everyone is so ignorant about it and nobody seems to know the difference. Anonymous (in an e-mail to the author)

Preface

I started reading the prostate cancer literature in 1984 after my Uncle Steve suddenly died. It still grieves me that he was undoubtedly killed by his prostate cancer treatment. In total, five of my uncles have suffered prostate cancer.

I became a prostate health activist. By 1995 I had founded the Internet newsgroups:

sci.med.prostate.prostatitis , sci.med.prostate.BPH , and sci.med.prostate.cancer . I was one of the original founders of the Prostate Problems Mailing List (PPML). My father and I co-founded the nonprofit Prostatitis Foundation ( Prostatitis.org ). I also started the Epididymitis Foundation ( EpididymitisFoundation.org ).

I was talking to patients from all over the world and was inundated with complaints. To put it mildly, men are often dissatisfied with urologists and urology. Because of my Internet activity, I suspect that I have had more access to complaints about urologists than any doctor in history.

I was in a perfect position to look over the shoulders of urologists, see what they do, and criticize them. My experience doing physician quality assurancecritiquing what doctors doalso prepared me for this role.

I wrote a book called The Prostatitis Syndromes , donating all proceeds to the nonprofit Prostatitis Foundation. As I wrote a second book, I decided to include prostate cancer.

I wrote too much for one book, so I wrote two books, this one on prostate cancer, and a companion book called, Prostatitis and BPH , which focuses on waking up at night to urinate, dribbling, prostatitis, BPH, bashful bladder syndrome, vasectomy, epididymitis, and sexual dysfunction.

Prostate cancer is typically the last of the three major prostate diseases to occur. Usually, during a mans lifetime prostatitis occurs first, then BPH, and finally prostate cancer. If you have prostate cancer, odds are overwhelming you already have prostatitis or BPH. So, to fully understand your prostate, you should also read my other book.

I maintain a website for this book about prostate cancer at SurvivingProstateCancerWithoutSurgery.org .

And one last thing: Thank you! I am very gratified that this book became a best seller for its original distribution company during the books very first year of publication!
