PART 1
Introduction
CHAPTER 1
The Exams

The California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET): Multiple Subjects exam is a computer-based test designed to measure subject matter knowledge for those wishing to teach in Californias public school system. The Multiple Subject Teaching Credential allows the teacher to instruct all subjects in a self-contained classroom for kindergarten through twelfth grade, although it is generally used to teach in elementary schools, kindergarten through grade six.

The CSET: Multiple Subjects exam was developed by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) based on textbooks, the states curriculum frameworks and standards, teacher education curriculum, and program standards of the CTC. The test contains three subtests, each of which includes multiple-choice and constructed-response questions. The subtests include the following subjects:

Picture 3 Subtest I: Reading, Language, and Literature; History and Social Science

Picture 4 Subtest II: Science, Mathematics

Picture 5 Subtest III: Physical Education, Human Development, and Visual and Performing Arts

You may choose to take each subtest separately or take all three in a single session. The testing times for each subtest are shown in the following list. An additional 15 minutes will be given to complete a nondisclosure agreement and an on-screen tutorial prior to the test.

Subtest I........ 3 hours

Subtest II....... 3 hours

Subtest III....... 2 hours, 15 minutes

Subtests I, II, and III .. 5 hours

Questions

Each subtest will contain multiple-choice and constructed-response questions. The multiple-choice questions will have four answer choices, labeled A, B, C, and D. These items will include either a question or an incomplete statement that can be completed by one of the answer choices. The items may also include a passage or visual aid, such as an illustration, chart, or table. After reading the material, question, or incomplete statement, you must select the one best response for each item. Many of the multiple-choice items involve higher-order thinking skills, as opposed to simple recall. These questions may require you to analyze or apply information, compare it with other information, or make a judgment.

The constructed-response items will include a paragraph, scenario, quote, or visual aid, followed by a related prompt or assignment requiring you to interpret, evaluate, correct, explain, or compare the information. You will then provide a short essay-type response.

How many of each type of question will be on each of the subtests? Lets find out.

Subtest I

Subtest I will include a total of 52 multiple-choice questions and 4 constructed-response questions, divided evenly between the two domains:

Picture 6 Reading, Language, and Literature: 26 multiple-choice and 2 constructed-response items

Picture 7 History and Social Science: 26 multiple-choice and 2 constructed-response items

Subtest II

Subtest II will include a total of 52 multiple-choice questions and 4 constructed-response questions, divided evenly between the two domains:

Picture 8 Science: 26 multiple-choice and 2 constructed-response items

Picture 9 Mathematics: 26 multiple-choice and 2 constructed-response items

Subtest III

Subtest III will include a total of 39 multiple-choice questions and 3 constructed-response questions, divided evenly among the three domains:
