Preface
Field hockey is an extraordinary team game played by a large number of men and women and boys and girls in more than 80 countries. Whether you are a novice or experienced field hockey player, you will appreciate the game more as your performance improves. This book provides you with a progressive step-by-step plan for developing field hockey skills and game tactics.
To realize the superior fun and enjoyment of playing field hockey, a player should learn and practice the four field hockey components of techniques, tactics, fitness, and motivation. Because field hockey balances all essential physical skills found in a cross section of sports, a field hockey player will encounter numerous mental and emotional challenges in addition to the physical demands. Although physical size is unrelated to success in field hockey, the successful player does need quick and skilled execution of fundamental techniques fueled by intelligence and physical prowess that includes proper body balance, muscular strength, aerobic endurance, flexibility, exceptional hand-eye coordination, and ballistic movement. It is common for the international player who plays on a swift artificial surface to run 2 1/2 to 5 miles during a 70-minute match while encountering individual and team problem-solving situations of coordinated technical skills.
