Acknowledgments

In a project of this magnitude, there are many people whodeserve thanks. I am truly grateful for the opportunities afforded to me by myparents, who bought me LEGO instead of Barbies andinvested in a canoe that we still use. We went camping and hiking instead ofdriving to Disney and struck the word impossible from our vocabulary.

Paul Heinerth deserves the utmost respect for steering meinto the cave safely when I was content to explore without proper guidance. Iowe the late Wes Skiles a debt of gratitude for helping me find the fit betweenmy creativity and obsession for the underwater world. And to Jim Bowden, thesincerest thanks for the constant encouragement to explore write and follow mypassion without limitations.

I owe a great debt to the many friends and colleagues thatlost their lives, but illustrated a safer path for all of us to follow. Theywill be sadly missed and always remembered for their contributions anddedication to the sport.

I also want to thank the multitude of dive partners, expeditionarycolleagues and dear friends whose faces either fill this text or simplyoverwhelm my brain with memorable experiences: Barbara am Ende ,Robert Bradish , Kenny Broad, John Buxton, KathleenByers, Ron Carmichael, Linda Claridge , ChristianClark, Jacki Clark, Joel Clark, Michael Costales , Rich Courtney, Klaus Christiansen, Richard Dreher , Joe Dituri , Jeff Dodd,Susan Eaton, Peter Eklund , Ali Falcone, John Falcone,Helen Farr, Martyn Farr, Amy Ferguson, Michel Angelo Gagliardi ,Mark Goodman, Brett Gonzalez, Drazen Goricki , Dmitri Gorski , DebraGreen, Larry Green, Kevin Gurr , Hugh Hansard , Jnna Herds lafsdttir , Lamar Hires, Tom Iliffe ,Danny Jetmore, Kelly Jessop, Brian Kakuk, Wayne Kinard ,Klaus Kristiansen, Bruno Kuzamanic , Marc Laukien , Marissa Lasso, Rasmus Lauritsen , Annette Long, Graham Maddocks ,Mark Long, Etienne Mackenson , Matt Matthes , Geoffrey May, Mark Meadows, Cory Mearns , Tom Morris, Kristine Rae Olmsted, Rick Palm, BrianPease, Rene Power, Nissa Quanstrom , Rich Rosato , Wendy Quimby , Jason Sapp, John Sapp, Dave Sawatzky ,Becky Kagan Schott, Phil Short, Mary Sloan, KimSmith, Daphne Soares , Eric Stadtmueller ,Bill Stone, Trisha Stovel , Terry Thomas, Joel Tower,John Vanderleest , Matt Vinzant ,Craig Walters, John Weisbrich , Mark Wenner , Michael Wright, and Khrista Zand . Dive Rite, Halcyon,Light & Motion, Suunto , Suunto UK and OMS provided equipment photography. Dr. Neil Pollack is owed specialthanks for assistance with improving the rebreather glossary.

Numerous manufacturers have offered gear for testing anduse over the years. Without their help, Im not sure if I could afford to staycurrent in my sport. Very special thanks to Santi, Suunto , Aquatica and Light & Motion for their generous support.Hollis, Aqualung, Fourth Element,Waterproof, Finnsub , Sherwood, PSI, VR Technology, Ursuit , Dive Rite and others have offered gear over theyears and it has been gratefully used and worn to threads.

Most importantly, I wish to express the deepest gratitudeto my loving husband Robert McClellan, who supports me in every aspect of mylife and career. It cant be easy being married to a girl who runs off each dayto partake in one of the most dangerous sports ever conceived. His patience, love and guidance continue to lift me to greater heights. His tireless effortsto edit, market and ship books to the post office on his bicycle, allow us tocontinue writing new manuals.

I could ask for nothing more in this wonderful life!
