Why we need masks?

O ur surroundings are full of pathogens it means we are living in challenging and risky environment where on daily basis we are in contact with lots of viruses, bacteria and many unknown microbes. To cater with these germs we really need some protection and mainly we need masks to protect ourselves and others from catching the bug no matter if we are ill or not as we never know may be the person sitting, standing and working next to us is the carrier of the virus. As we all know that the now a days the talk of the town is the Coronavirus that can spread like other respiratory diseases. Droplets from an infected persons cough or sneeze can carry the virus to another person. This usually happens if one has been in close contact with an infected person for a certain period of time. Thats what mask is for. It blocks large-particle droplets and splatters which reduces the spread of the virus. Another way of catching the bug is by touching the things. This will increase your chance of falling ill. Mask protects us in a way that by wearing it we cant touch our mouth. On the other hand, mask shields us from the dust, dangerous smoke and other pathogens which are in the environment. It means we have to make it our habit.

Researches have shown that when we speak the small micro droplets come flying out of our mouth 6 feet or more. Those particles contains millions of particles of virus if a person is infected. Lets understand it with an example we all know if we hold a bottle of spray with water in it and we hold a T-shirt in front of it and spray then the spray hits the T-shirt and doesnt go past it or the majority of it doesnt go past it. We just need some kind of cloth barrier between your mouth and the people around you. So if we dont wear a mask that means that we are risking our and others lives which is awful thing to do!

Why to make your own mask?

T he world at present is going through a crises like never before. The biggest issue we are facing right now is the shortage of PPE specifically a mask, a protective and important guard, for us now a days. Even if they are accessible now the demands suddenly goes through the roof and they are just hard to get it. By making it at home we can save lives.

DIYs mask can easily be used to prevent from the exposure of spreading diseases. Those who are using expensive N-95 masks. They are using it repeatedly over and over again for number of days and even in some cases number of weeks which is really not a safe practice. Almost all of the surgical masks and N 95 mask are not washable and hence are not reusable.

So why not to make your own mask to wear in public and be economical. Research scientist Jeremy Howard say that despite guidance from the CDC, healthy people wearing masks is a good step towards the growing spread of virus. Cambridge university studies show that the two layered cotton mask works pretty well. Hong Kong scientist has shown that nearly the perfect thing is the double layered cotton cloth from a T-shirt and put a piece of a paper towel between them and tie up it to the head and at the end of the day you can throw away the paper towel. Then you can wash the cloth mask with the soapy water. Howard suggest that simple fabric you might find around your house can be converted into your mask. The best thing is to use the cotton cloth that can be a bed sheet or some old shirt.
