However, since research and regulation constantly change clinical standards, the reader is urged to check the product information sheet included in the package of each drug, which includes recommended doses, warnings, and contraindications. Preface
Blood Clots and Strokes: A Guide for Parents and Little Folks is perhaps the most rewarding publication with which I have been involved. The idea for the book arose from the numerous conversations I have had with concerned parents over the past decade of caring for children with blood clots and strokes. I have attempted to answer the most common questions asked by parents during that time.
In general, blood clots occur in children who have major primary illnesses. For many parents, the news of a blood clot is another in a long line of complications. In some children, the clot is the surprise complication which impairs otherwise good recovery. Less commonly, the clot or stroke is a sudden devastating blow to an otherwise well child. Despite the emotional trauma that often accompanies the news of the blood clot, I am always impressed by the desire of the parents to understand their child's illness, their willingness to explain the illness to their child, and their overwhelming ability to put all else aside to do whatever is required to help their child.
I chose to format the book as a series of specific questions and answers because I think this format will be the most helpful and allow for quick and easy reference. The questions are all those I have been directly asked by many parents. My answers have changed over the years. First, because our knowledge in the field of clots and stroke in children is rapidly expanding. The huge amount of research currently ongoing in this field in pediatrics will continue to modify some of these answers in the future. Second, over time I have learned from parents how to better express the complex nature of the diseases and treatments in terms that they can understand and pass on to their family members and children. Families are different and for a given question, no single answer is suitable for all parents. This book will not replace the need to discuss your child's illness with your physician, and in certain circumstances, aspects of the answers to some questions may vary. However, I have endeavored to provide parents with an understanding which will enable them to appreciate the need for individual consideration in the care of their children.
Apart from the many parents and children who have indirectly contributed to the content of the book, there are a number of people who have directly contributed and who I wish to thank. In particular, Ms LuAnn Brooker who assisted with editing this book, Dr. Gabrielle deVeber, a friend and colleague who assisted with the section on stroke, and the rest of my clinical and laboratory research team, who I depend upon greatly. Finally, I wish to thank my publisher, B.C. Decker Inc., for helping bring this idea to fruition.
I hope this book proves useful to parents and children alike.
