7 HINTS FOR TEACHING YOUR CHILD TO READ
Learning to read should be easy and fun. Playing word games that include rhyming words, silly sentences, and sound awareness, all build your childs awareness of sounds and language critical skills for successful reading.
1. Play initial sounds games. Parent and child think of words that start with the same sound ( big, bear, band ). Practice saying the initial sound ( b-b-b-b ).
2. Another initial sound game. The adult says the initial sound ( b-b-b-b ) and the child jumps in with the word ( Bang! Beautiful! ).
3. Play rhyming games. Start out by saying a few words that rhyme ( bug, jug ) and then ask your child to think of more rhymes ( hug, lug, mug ). If your child is having trouble, suggest an initial sound. (Try putting rrr before ug .) Nonsense words work, too!
4. Make a rhyming flower. Draw a flower stem with a circle on top and print - ug (or any word ending) inside the circle.
Cut out petal shapes. Inside each petal, ask your child to write the initial sound of an - ug word ( b for bug, j for jug, etc ). Then put the petals around the center to make a rhyming flower.
5. Sing. Add funny rhymes to familiar songs like Mary had a little lamb, little jam, little clam. Or Row, row, row your goat.
6. Make silly mistakes. Baa, baa, black sheep, have you any flowers?
7. Have fun. Your own enjoyment sets the tone for your family. Talking, singing, and reading with your child will launch a lifetime of learning.
