9 HINTS FOR TEACHING YOUR CHILD TO READ SIGHT WORDS
1.Be sensitive to your childs learning style. Some kids want to figure out sight words on their own, others appreciate more guidance. Both ways are fine.
2.Some sight words can be sounded out. Others need to be understood in the context of the sentence or through illustration cues.
3.At first, anticipate your child will read sight words slowly. As the words become more familiar, reading speed will increase.
4.Keep flash cards fun by limiting your sessions to three or four minutes.
5.Sit next to each other, rather than across, so your child will know that you are on his side as he practices with flash cards.
6.Only show a sight word for a few seconds. If your child does not recognize the sight word, calmly say it, then flip the card and encourage your child to read the sentence.
7.For fun, use sight word cards and pictures cut from magazines to create sentences. Have 35 cards handy in case you want to add more words.
8.Hang sight word cards all around your house and send your child on a sight word hunt!
9.Remember, keep your reading and sight words sessions light and have fun!
