The study of Australian income tax law has become increasingly complex as existing laws are modified and new laws introduced over time. The objective of our book is to familiarise the reader with tax problems that are relevant to current situations and that reflect the most recent legislative and judicial developments.
Now in its 27th edition, the Australian Taxation Study Manual contains over 290 worked questions grouped according to 12 major topic headings. Topics can be quickly referenced through the helpful index, case table and finding list. Each question deals with an everyday tax problem or situation and contains fully-worked calculations in the solutions provided. Examples are cross-referenced to Australian Master Tax Guide (CCH, 2016), Australian Taxation Law (OUP, 2017) and Foundations of Taxation Law (OUP, 2017).
Section 1 of the book provides tax questions with suggested solutions, so readers can assess how effectively they have interpreted and applied their knowledge of income tax law and tax case law. Section 2 contains numerous questions without solutions for use by instructors in tutorials or as weekly assignments. (Solutions for the multi-issue questions are available to lecturers. Please contact your sales representative.)
When using our book, the reader should understand that often there is not a definitive answer to a tax problem, but merely suggestions as to possible answers. However, in providing suggested solutions we aim to raise the most important issues that you need to consider when answering each question.
We sincerely hope that the Australian Taxation Study Manual will stimulate your interest in taxation generally, encourage you to read widely and debate the major tax issues with others, and assist in your understanding of the application of income tax law to many practical situations.
The authors expressly exclude themselves from any contractual, tortious or other form of liability to any person for any loss or damage sustained or for any consequence which may be thought to arise either directly or indirectly from reliance on statements made in this book. Persons using our book should rely on their own enquiries or their taxation adviser in making any decisions relating to their own or other persons interests.
The questions and suggested solutions for the 27th edition are based on the tax law and tax rates applicable to the 2016/17 tax year as stated at 4 May 2017. Finally, for fringe benefits tax, the questions and solutions relate to the 2016/17 FBT year.
The publisher and the authors would like to thank Grant Richardson for his hard work and collegiate support over numerous editions of this text.
