NOT AFRAID
Read about trusting God during hard times in Psalm 31.
RESEARCHERS SAY PEOPLE LIKE FEELING SCARED as long as theres no real danger. Thats why riding roller coasters, skydiving, and adrenaline-filled sports are so popular (of course, some of those activities can actually be dangerous). But many times frightening images, especially from movies or the internet, can get stuck in our brains, causing us to have bad dreams or be afraid.
Instead of getting caught up in scary or evil stuff, God wants us to focus on him. He doesnt want us to be afraid. He came to cast out fear. Psalm 118:6 says, The L ORD is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? Because God lives in us through the Holy Spirit, we have no reason to be afraid. Our eternity is secure with our heavenly Father. We may have moments of fear, but deep down we should know that with God on our side, we dont need to stay afraid.
Instead of being fearful, ask God to help you stand out in the world by living fearlessly. Be courageous. Be bold. Be excited about God. If you have friends who struggle with fear, tell them about the peace that comes from knowing the one and only Savior.
Pray: Tell God youre going to stand in his truth and not get sucked into the culture of fear.
Be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the L ORD !
PSALM 31:24
SNAKE IN THE GRASS
Read about Adam and Eves disobedience in Genesis 2:43:7.
SOME SNAKES JUST LOOK SCARY. When a king cobra rises up and displays its diamond-shaped hood, you naturally want to run. Other snakes sound mean. You never want to be close enough to hear a rattlesnake shake its tail. Then there are the colorful snakes. These striped serpents can be deadly, like the coral snake, or perfectly harmless, like the scarlet king snake. A good rule to follow if you see a red, black, and yellow striped snake is Red next to yellow kills a fellow. Red next to black is a friend to Jack. But unless youre an expert, its probably best not to pick up snakes no matter what color they are.
God created the beautiful Garden of Eden and told Adam he could eat from any tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Then a snake (you may know him better as Satan) tempted Eve into eating from the tree, saying, Your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat [the fruit], and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil (Genesis 3:5). Of course, it was a lie. Eve and Adam both disobeyed God, fell for the temptation, and ate the fruit. The consequences were huge. It messed up their relationship with God and brought sin into the world, and they were kicked out of the Garden.
You will also be tempted to disobey God and to think you know better than he does. Dont give in. God wants the best for you. Obey him, knowing that he has a way more amazing life planned for you than you could ever imagine for yourself.
Pray: Thank God for being your Creator and Savior. Tell him that you want to follow him.
You wont die! the serpent replied to the woman. God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.
