Every effort has been made to ensure that the content provided on this book is accurate and helpful for our readers at the time of publishing. However, this is not an exhaustive treatment of the subjects and as you probably know, the Department of State could change their testing practice or layout to the AFOQT selection process at any moment. No liability is assumed for losses or damages due to the information provided. You are responsible for your own choices, actions, and results.
If you are reading this, you are probably on the verge of one of the most critical points in your military career.
Officer Training School awaits, consisting of nine and a half weeks that will unlock one of the best careers you could dream of.
From the earliest days of in-processing during Phase 1, to the moment you graduate from Phase 4, its all so close. Not to mention a whole career filled with personal growth, prestige, and the ability to serve the United States of America in one of the most respected roles on the planet.
Right now, theres just one thing standing in your way. The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test, known as the AFOQT.
The AFOQT is a grueling five-hour series of 12 separate subtests. It tests everything from your vocabulary to your personality, from your math skills to your ability to read aircraft instruments.
You can take the AFOQT a maximum of twice in your lifetime. Your most recent AFOQT score is the one that stays with you.
The importance of getting your best possible score the first time around cannot be overstated. Why? If you want to retake the AFOQT, you have to wait six months.
A six-month wait can slam the brakes on your life plans. Even worse, the way the AFOQT works is you receive a range of different composite scores depending on how you perform on the subtests.
Retaking the AFOQT in hopes of getting a better score is a risky move. If you end up having a bad day your second time around and fail even one subtest, youre finished. Your old score is wiped out, and you are barred from ever attempting the AFOQT again.
With that in mind, its crucial to give the AFOQT everything youve got the first time around. Dont rush your test date. Give yourself enough time to prepare for everything it will throw at you.
With dedication and drive, you are more than capable of making your dreams come true by scoring highly the first time.
Your destiny really is in your hands. If you want to make it to Officer Training School bad enough with the right career path ahead of you, you can. Put in the hours, study the material, and practice, practice, practice.
You need to ensure that any study materials you use are up-to-date and accurate or else youll be lead astray.
Some study guides claim to be tailored to the latest form of the AFOQT, but dont even feature the correct names for the various subtests!
This study guide is a true reflection of the AFOQT Form T, the tests current form which has been effective since 2015. It reflects all the changes that were made from the previous version, Form S.
You owe it to yourself to make every effort to succeed. The stakes are too high not to. This isnt just a regular test for a regular job.
Its the AFOQT the first step on your journey toward the best career on Earth.
This study guide will not only prepare you for that test, it will ensure you get there effectively and efficiently. With that, lets begin.
The AFOQT consists of 12 different subtests. Each is designed to test an aspect of knowledge, skill, or personality that correlates with success in later stages of Air Force training.
Each subtest receives its own chapter in this study guide, along with a full practice test.
Here is an overview of each subtest showing its name, purpose, number of questions, and the time you are allocated for each section.
SUBTEST NAME | TYPE OF TEST | NUMBER OF | TIME |
Verbal Analogies | Word relationships
Arithmetic Reasoning | Math problems in word puzzles
Word Knowledge | Vocabulary
Math Knowledge | Math | ||
Reading Comprehension | Reading
Situational Judgement | Leadership and decision making
Physical Science | Scientific knowledge
Table Reading | Rapid data gathering
Instrument Comprehension | Flight instruments and orientation
Block Counting | Spatial awareness | 4.5
Aviation Information | Flight theory and practice |
The AFOQT also features a Self-Description Inventory, which is a personality test consisting of 240 questions. This cannot be studied for, and there is no way to prepare for it. So it wont be covered in this book. That section of the test is used for the Air Force to better understand you and how you think.
When something matters as much as the AFOQT, its natural youll have a lot of questions. Well answer some of the most common and most important questions here before we begin with study practices.
Do I have to take every subtest of the AFOQT, even if they arent all relevant to my chosen career path?
Yes. The AFOQT has to be taken as a whole. That means all subtests. There are no exceptions to this.
How many times can I retake the AFOQT?
You are allowed to take the AFOQT twice under normal circumstances. There is techni cally a waiver system which allows some people to take it a third time, but this is incredibly rare and almost never happens. In order to clear a waiver and take it a third time, youd need to have a legitimate excuse for why a third time was required. This could be that there was a death in the family, or some major event that caused you to be under duress when taking the exam. You also have to wait six months between AFOQT tests.
Can I use my best AFOQT score from my two attempts?
No. Your most recent score is the only score that counts. If you take the AFOQT a second time, that score is your permanent score for the rest of your life.
How has the Form T version of the AFOQT changed from the previous Form S?
As a result of feedback from existing officers, the AFOQT made the following changes when switching from Form S to Form T in 2015.
- All questions were updated across the entire test to make the exam more difficult and be a better representation of a candidates capability.
- The Reading Comprehension section was added to assess a candidates suitability for the Professional Military Education (PME) aspect of training.
