Chapter 20: Thinking Process That Can Help You Change..................136
INTRODUCTION
O
penings are chess tactics introduced in the opening game to take control of the middle of the chessboard. The game-opening kicks off with the first move and ends
when the middle board, usually after about ten moves each, is dominated by one player.
Right in the middle of the chessboard, the center of the board consists of four squares. Control of the centerboard makes attacking and advancing pieces more challenging for your opponent. Therefore, a highly coveted tactical advantage is the possession of the centerboard.
A well-rounded chess opening allows your major pieces to exit the back row for attacking or defending purposes and controlling the middle board. Openings (such as castling king-side) should also cover your king and not leave your king in a vulnerable role.
When playing an opening, a range of tried and tested "rules" should be followed, such as putting your knights forward as soon as possible. Many squares can be targeted by knights and are very good for protecting the centerboard. You do not grow just one side of your chess pieces. This will cause the centerboard to be taken advantage of by your opponent. Parts are more useful away from the board's hand, too.
Stop getting too violently struck. Know that gaps are used to bring the defensive positions in place. Only a few opening techniques with these rules in mind can accomplish all of the above objectives. Such methods are called openings and are frequently used again and again.
When the opponent plays their moves, each opening has a variety of variations that can be adapted. Openings are remembered by experienced players, and, thus, when they are played, little thinking is needed. Therefore, the first half-a-dozen movements are usually made in fast succession between two experienced players.
Names such as the Sicilian Defense, English Opening, Queens Gambit, Two Knights Defense, etc., have famous openings. These and many other openings are found in various directories, books, and blogs for openings. They will have a more versatile arsenal of weapons to use against their enemy as a player learns more opportunities.
Are you ready to explore the rudiments of chess openings to make you a better player?
Lets get started.
CHAPTER 1
THE RULES OF THE CHESS GAME
C
hess is played on a chequered board comprising 64 squares. The squares of the board alternate in color and are called light and dark squares. These squares are
arranged into columns and rows
Rows are called grades and are numbered from 1 - 8
Columns are called files and are labeled from A - H
Parts are set up in lines parallel to the files and perpendicular to the board ranks.
The Bits
Parts are divided into two sets that are commonly called black and white, regardless f their colors. Each player begins with 16 pieces. Those are bits.
1 King: Probably the most valuable piece on the board, the point of the game is to try to catch your opponent's king. The king can travel in any direction in one room.
1 Queen: A strong piece, the queen can move in a straight line in any direction, as far as the player likes, as long as another piece doesn't get in the way.
2 Bishops: The bishop can move diagonally in any direction, as far as the player wishes, as long as another piece doesn't get in the way,
2 Knights: A Knight will move two squares forward and one step to the right or left. This transfer can be performed in any direction, as long as the same amount of distance is covered in the same way. The knight will make his move over other pieces as well.
2 Rooks: The Rook can move in any direction in a straight line as far as the player wants, as long as another piece doesn't get in the way.
8 Pawns: Pawns are the backbone of the Army of Chess. They can only move forward in general and can only move one room at a time. They can, however, go two spaces forward on their first move.
Also, moving diagonally is the only way for a pawn to capture an enemy. The board is set up with light-colored in the nearest square to each player on their far-right.
The non-pawn pieces are found in the row closest to each player. If you're a white team, the pieces are set up as a rook, bishop, knight, queen, king, knight, bishop, rook, from left to right.
If you are the black team, the pieces are set as knight, rook, bishop, king, queen, bishop, knight rook, from left to right. Both armies ought to be mirror images of each other. Each queen should stand on a square of its color.
The Game Play
The first move is made by the player who is designated to be white. Parts are then moved to an unoccupied square or a square with a piece of the opponent. On each turn, each player can move one piece, and turns will alternate. When the piece moves to an opponent's piece, it is said that their piece is caught and taken out of play.
En passant is a move carried out by two opposing pawns in which, under special conditions, one pawn can catch the other without moving to his square. Castling is a move in which, in special situations, both the king and the rook move during the same turn to a predefined position.
If a pawn reaches the far end of the board during play, they are promoted and traded for an additional piece of any piece that the player requires, except the king. The purpose of the game is to catch the king of your adversary.
When a player maneuvers their pieces to catch the opponent's king on their next move, the opponent is said to be in check. They have to move their pieces to get out of check before the next move.
