A banquet of peaks and precipices tower over Tuolumne Meadows and the rounded rock of Lembert Dome.
Thirty years ago, I worked very long hours behind a desk five or six days a week, putting in plenty of overtime and spending way too much time indoors. On my precious days off I tried to get outdoors as much as possible, but with all of lifes demands, I rarely had more than a few hours each week to get out in nature. On top of that, I was frequently plagued with injuries to my knees and hipslikely due to my chained-to-the-office lifestyle.
But one day I made a decision to commit more of my life to the beauty of the great outdoors, and I started scheduling my hiking time with the same level of commitment as I scheduled my business meetings and social obligations.
I began my new, nature-focused life on the trails in this book. Yes, I got more exercise when I hiked these paths, but they are by no means arduous or strenuous. Some trails may present a few gentle challenges for those who are less fit, but all of them were chosen for their scenic beauty and fun factor. Feel free to bring along your children, your grandma, or your spouse who thinks the great outdoors is nothing but mosquitoes and poison oak. Every trail in this book was chosen because it offers a good payoffa reason for going besides just exercise. These eighty hikes lead you away from pavement, exhaust fumes, and crowds, to places where youd rather be: sparkling waterfalls, scenic viewpoints, and peaceful forests.
To choose these hikes, I walked every trail in this book, most of them many times over. I also hiked plenty of other trails that didnt make the cut, often because they were too difficult or too dull to ensure that everybody would have fun. I also made extensive use of field testers: I brought along my eighty-year-old mom. I forced my not-so-enthusiastic-about-hiking friends to traipse along with me. I even made my friends kids tag along (and usually they were way out in front).
During my travels, what I found out is that there are plenty of Northern California trails designed for ordinary people, not just the hardcore outdoors enthusiast. And when ordinary people hike those trails, they feel happy.
I look forward to seeing you (and your children, grandmas, and spouses) out there.

by Seabury Blair Jr., author of The Creaky Knees Guide Washington, The Creaky Knees Guide Oregon, and The Creaky Knees Guide Pacific Northwest National Parks and Monuments
The beginning of each trail description is intended to give you quick information that can help you decide whether the specific day hike is one that interests you. Heres what youll find:
Trails are numbered in this guide following the main highway corridors in seven geographic regions in Northern California: North Coast and Redwoods; Shasta and Lassen; Mendocino, Sonoma, and Napa; Sacramento and Gold Country; San Francisco Bay Area; Lake Tahoe and the Northern Sierra; and Yosemite and Mammoth Lakes.
Rating Creaky Knees hikes was difficult for me. In the first place, I asked the very wise and generous editor, why would anyone want to take a hike I rate with only one star? A guidebook should only outline hikes that are worth taking, not dung-heap trails you wouldnt recommend to a psycho killer.
He replied: True, but you must distinguish between the very best trailswith five starsand the trails that arent quite so goodwith one to four stars. The trails that really suck (and I paraphrase here because editors are much too refined to use that term) wont be outlined here. Some hikes may not be as good as others, but they are all better than the ones that really bite.
Another problem I had was attempting to be objective in rating the trails. Im a pushover for hikes above timberline, where the wildflowers wave in gentle summer breezes, where mountains claw the clouds, where cooling snowfields linger through summer. So I may have rated these trails higher than you might rate them.
If youre a hiker who loves walking along rattling rivers or past forested lakes, or padding on rain-forest trails softened by mosses, Id suggest you add one star to every lowland hike and subtract one star from every alpland hike in this guide.
Finally, objective criteria like trail conditions, trail length, and obstacles such as creek crossings can affect the overall rating. On the other hand, you can forget all that junk and just take my word for it.
