In my philosophy of medicine, all pathologies can be traced back to one or more of the 7 Toxicities, a concept I coined originally over 25 years ago and continued to refine over the next decade and a half. Ten years ago, I introduced the concept of the 7 Toxicities to the general public in my international bestselling book The 9 Steps to Keep the Doctor Away. The most interesting thing about these 7 Toxicitieswhich 20 years ago was referred to as irresponsible yet today is no longer a controversial conceptrevolves around the subject of these 7 Toxicities all leading to oxidative stress.

In chemistry, we refer to oxidation as the reduction reaction, which is popularly referred to as oxidative injury today. It is nothing more than what occurs during the rusting process and further appreciated when visualizing the browning that happens to a banana or an apple after its been cut and left to sit for 10 minutes. This mechanism of action of oxidation is the underlying causative agent fueling all chronic disease; it is the common denominator of all pathology.

Using the concept of the 7 Toxicities as one of the key pillars in our philosophy at the Centers for Advanced Medicine, we have now treated patients from 93 different countries for the most serious of medical conditions, including late-stage cancer, heart disease, stroke, and more. The theory and postulate have now been tested and proven and are the underlying fundamental basis of how we approach treatment of all chronic disease in our clinics. So whats all this got to do with anxiety and how is it relevant to this book? Well, the answer may very well be the aha moment our planet needs today more than ever!

Even though no one of the 7 Toxicities is more important than the other, special acknowledgment ought to be given to the 5th Toxicity. The 5th Toxicity is the emotional/psychological toxicity that, at some level, affects every single person and perhaps all life-forms on this planet. It is this emotional/psychological toxicity that contributes and ignites the fires of chronic disease and fuels it to progress rampantly... in many cases, insidiously. And the manifestation of that progression takes the form of anxiety, leading to fear and depression, progressing to hopelessness and worse.

Liana Werner-Grays book Anxiety-Free with Food is a great place to begin to learn how we can help our physiology achieve a better foundation to help tolerate the bombardment of the inevitable baggage we accumulate. The accumulation of the traumas we experience as we grow and mature, along with their impact on our physiology, has been virtually ignored. In fact, in my professional opinion, it has become the most insidious causation of pathology playing a leading role in all chronic disease. This may at first seem like another over-the-top statement. However, the more chronically ill patients I see, the clearer it becomes to me that if the emotional/psychological underlying issues are not addressed adequately to resolve anxiety and fear, the patient will never recover and regain their health. Resolving conflict, alleviating anxiety, and focusing on love are the most important things we as a society must realize in order to evolve and survive on our planet. Liana does an outstanding job in giving us the first place to start in this journey by helping us improve our physiology with the right foods to help us become anxiety-free!

Rashid A. Buttar, D.O., FAAPM, FACAM, FAAIM, medical director for the Centers for Advanced Medicine and Clinical Research
