The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) recognizes various categories of sites that offer areas where the sky is dark at night, free from light pollution and particularly suitable for astronomical observing. A number of sites in Great Britain and Ireland have been given specific recognition and are shown on the map. These are:

In Britain there is also the Dark Sky Discovery organisation. This gives recognition to smaller sites, again free from immediate light pollution, that are open to observing at any time. Some sites are used for specific, public observing sessions. A full listing of sites is at:
