SERIES FOREWORD
I have been very gratified by the popularity and positive feedback that the authors of the Case Review series have received on the publication of their volumes. Reviews in journals and word-of-mouth comments have been uniformly favorable. The authors have done an outstanding job in filling the need for an affordable, easy-to-read, case-based learning tool that supplements THE REQUISITES series, and volumes in the Case Review series are ideal for oral board preparation and subspecialty certification tests.
Although some students learn best in a noninteractive study book mode, others need the anxiety or excitement of being quizzedbeing put on the hot seat. The Case Review formatthat is, a limited number of images needed to construct a differential diagnosis presented with a few clinical and imaging questionswas designed to simulate the Boards experience (the only difference is that the Case Review books give you the correct answer and immediate feedback). Cases are scaled from relatively easy (Opening Round) to very difficult (Challenger) to test the limit of the readers knowledge. A brief commentary, a link back to THE REQUISITES volume, and up-to-date references also are provided.
Because of the popularity of the series we have been rolling out the second editions, with the expectation that the second editions will bring the material to the state-of-the-art, introduce new modalities and new techniques, and provide new and even more graphic examples of pathology.
Brain Imaging by Dr. Laurie A. Loevner is the latest of the second editions. Laurie has labored extensively to provide almost 90% new cases, color images, and examples of the latest imaging modalities. She has worked assiduously for many months to perfect the book in the way that she has said would earn me an A+ grade. Brain Imaging is the best selling of all of the volumes in the Case Review series, and I can tell you that the second edition is well worth the wait. Enjoy.
I am pleased to present for your imminent pleasure the latest volume of the second editions of the Case Review series, joining the previous second editions of Head and Neck Imaging, by David M. Yousem and Carol Motta; Genitourinary Imaging, by Ronald J. Zagoria, William W. Mayo-Smith, and Julia R. Fielding; Obstetric and Gynecologic Ultrasound, by Karen L. Reuter and T. Kemi Babagbemi; General and Vascular Ultrasound, by William D. Middleton; Spine Imaging, by Brian Bowen, Alfonso Rivera, and Efrat Saraf-Lavi; Musculoskeletal Imaging, by Joseph Yu; and Gastrointestinal Imaging, by Peter J. Feczko and Robert D. Halpert.

PREFACE
When I finished the first edition of this book I said I felt a sense of amazement, wonder, and ecstasy. Having finished the second edition, I again feel tremendously amazed, wonderful, and ecstatic too... but I must confess I also feel an extraordinary sense of relief! It is nine years and two kids later, and it has been an equally delightful, crazy, and interesting journey getting here. The completion of this manuscript continues to be among the highlights of my academic career.
This book provides insight into disease processes that affect the brain and the central nervous system through the interpretation of a spectrum of imaging studies. In addition to conventional MR and CT imaging, this edition also focuses on using advanced imaging techniques that have evolved over the last decade, including spectroscopy, diffusion imaging, perfusion imaging, functional imaging, CTA, MRA, and conventional catheter angiography to discriminate one entity from among the other possible diagnoses. In this second edition, close to 90% of the cases are new, and approximately 45 new diseases are presented that were not covered in the first edition. Because the book is organized to present a spectrum of diseases in a case-by-case format, you can pick it up and read it when you find those free moments (without losing your place), or you may read it for hours on end if you choose to (and I hope you do)!
