From the time we first met about 2 decades (or so) ago, the one thing that has not changed is Rajan Chhibber's passion for music and his passion for sharing knowledge. The belief which we both share is that, 'If you go to sleep having learned a new technique, or having upgraded your skill or having acquired knowledge about even one new thing, you can say that you have had a good day'.To learn how to sight read will give you this opportunity every day.
While the above is true, one is always looking for ways to get started. This book is an excellent choice for guitar players desiring to learn sight reading. It will be your introduction to the world of sight reading. It gently adds information in small chunks, along with exercises to solidify your learning, just so that when you reach the next lesson you are already comfortable with the previous one.Rajan says, I do not teach, I help you learn'. Hope you get the drift. While he shares his knowledge, the onus is really on you to learn with Patience, Perseverance and regular Practice. He and I cannot do this for you!!! Nobody else can!!! It has got to be You.Start slow and work towards speed as you progress. But all this while ensure that you are on a steady tempo.
Practice reading like you practice playing the guitar; over and over again. I cannot stress more on the need for constant practice.Rajan, as I await the formal publication of this book, I want to congratulate you on this and also wish you all the very best not only for the success of this book but also for the success of the guitarists who read this book!!! Any other music theory is out of scope of this book. Also, out of scope is to help students learn how to play the guitar. Here are some examples of what you should already know or learn as a prerequisite:
- Meaning of terms like Sharp, Flat and Natural notes. Where are they on the guitar and how to play them?
- What is a fret and what is an open string?
- Fret numbering
- String numbering (hint: Number 6 is the biggest, String number 6 is the thickest)
This book is a journey that has just begun!!!Preface
By buying this book, you have taken the first step towards learning how to read music!!! Learning how to read is an iterative process. For studying this book, it is strongly urged that you keep reviewing the previous topics as you move forward. This is not a thriller novel which you want to finish in one read because you cannot wait to get to the end!!! Lets draw a parallel with a child who is learning how to read English.
First step is to learn to read the alphabets. Next step is to learn simple words like Eat, Cat, Sun, etc. This process will have to be done repetitively, iterating back and forth, patiently so that the mind is trained to quickly see the word and interpret it. Then come bigger words, short sentences, long sentences, paragraphs etc. and it takes time before you can read some complex material. This book is more suitable for Guitarist who play with a plectrum / pick. Let's Get Started!!!Please do not create illegal copies!!!
