The meaning of the term may also include the interpretation of all of the symbols of musical notation and the understanding of the composer's intentions. Nevertheless, this text will only concern itself with the ability to look at musical notes and play them instantly. To be sure, this text is designed to teach you the easiest, fastest and best way to look at music and perform the music on sight with little or no preparation. This is also known as sight-reading. In order to read words in language you must be able to recognize words and understand what they mean.

In like manner, when reading music you must be able look at a notes and know their names ( which tells you what note to play) and must also know what kind of note it is (which tells you how many beats it gets). KNOWING NAMES OF NOTES TELLS YOU WHAT NOTE TO PLAY. KNOWING KINDS OF NOTES TELLS YOU HOW MANY BEATS EACH NOTE GETS. If, therefore, you do not know the names of notes and what kind os notes they are you will not be able to read them. SOME CLEF SIGNS The tone C shown here in the diagram below is the same tone in all 4 clefs: To be sure, the note C above LOOKS different in each clef but it is the same note and it sounds the same. The different clefs are used for instruments whose range allows most of the notes written to be written ON the clef and not above or below with many ledger lines making it difficult to read.

Since most musical instruments use the Treble or Bass clefs, this text will use the Treble Clef to allow for learning the EasyWay to read music for all musical instruments that use the Treble Clef. The PIANO AND/OR KEYBOARD USES BOTH THE TREBLE AND BASS CLEFS SOME KINDS OF MUSICAL NOTES A Musical Tone is the sound of anything that vibrates with an even number or regular vibrations. Noise, on the other hand, is generally defined as vibrations that are irregular and uneven. SHARPS AND FLATS A Sharp raises the sound of a tone. A Flat lowers the sound of a tone.

A Natural means the tone is neither sharp nor flat. A Double Sharp ( also written as ) raises the sound of a tone twice. A Double Flat lowers the sound of a tone twice NAMING MUSICAL NOTES THE MUSICAL ALPHABET Musical tones have names that use only 7 letters of the alphabet - The Musical Alphabet: A B C D E F G In the Treble Clef the names of the musical tones are: In the Bass Clef the names of the musical tones are: In the Treble Clef the note A is on the 2nd space:In the Bass Clef the note A is on the 1st space: If you want to learn to name all the notes in music easily, memorize that in the Treble Clef the note A is on the 2nd space. But in the Bass Clef, memorize that in the Bass Clef the note A is on the 1st space. Since A is on the 2nd space in the Treble Clef, notes written above A are in alphabetical order: Notes that are below the 2nd space are still alphabetical but in order to find them you have to think the alphabet in reverse or backwards:

It is the same for the Bass Clef except that the note A is on the 1st space. To find the notes above A, think the alphabet: To find the notes below A, think the alphabet backwards: Remember the Musical Alphabet has only 7 letters: A B C D E F G In the Treble Clef, A is on the 2nd space.

In the Bass Clef, A is on the 1st space. To find and name notes, first find and name the note A, then: Going up, think: A B C D E F G Going down, think: G F E D C B A NAMING NOTES INSTANTLYTHE KEY TO READING MUSIC IN ONE DAY The fastest, best and easiest way to learn the names of all the notes is to take a page of music from a lesson book or something similar (such as the music on this page) write down the name of each note underneath it. At first you will go slowly but soon, as you near the end of the page, you will recognize the names of all notes instantly. Do this once and you will never have trouble naming a note again. Once you can name the notes on sight, you will find yourself reading music in a single day. Later I will show you how to sight read music .
