Even extreme fussiness, he says, is not dangerous and usually stops when the child is about four months old. In the meanwhile, however, life can be tough for the whole family. Introduction
How to Use This Book if
You Have Not Yet Delivered Your Baby

Are you a mother reading this book before you have delivered your baby? If so, I strongly suggest that you read Chapters 1, 2, and 3, which explain what we know about fussy babies, so that you will better understand how to soothe your baby after your baby is born.

How to Use This Book if
You Have Already Delivered Your Baby

If you have already delivered your baby and are exhausted or worried or both, turn to Chapter 7 immediately for a quick summary of the background and plan of action. Then turn to Chapter 3 for more details.

If you are a father reading this book, you will not suffer from baby brainthe confused mental state caused by the fatigue, stress, and sleep deprivation from not sleeping well for many months before and after the baby is born. Therefore, read the entire book as quickly as you can to coach your wife through this wonderful, marvelous, and chaotic time.

What Is Fussing?

Giving birth to a new baby unleashes unique and powerful forces within both mother and baby. The experience of childbirth is an event unlike all others. Furthermore, the job of having a baby is different from the more ordinary pleasures women experience. Caressing her, holding her warm skin to your cheek, feeding her, gazing into her eyes your heart melts. Could there be a more beautiful and graceful creation?

During the first few days, your child is so peaceful and calm, you may wonder if you have to wake her to feed her. You may notice that she does not suck with very much strength or interest before she snoozes off into deep slumber again. It is even normal for your baby to lose weight during these first few days. In fact, if your baby was born early, this quiet and sleepy state may last longer than a few days.

After a few days, or around the due date for babies born early, however, you may notice that things begin to change. Your baby becomes more wakeful and alert and sucks with more strength. She has a more wide-open-eyed look. It is as if her sleepy brain has begun to wake up-just in time to catch the breast milk if you are nursing your baby. The weight loss that is normal in babies during the few days after birth slows down, stops, and then reverses itself.

As your baby becomes more wakeful, she moves her arms and legs around more, and her eyes study and follow you about; sometimes she may even fuss for several minutes. To fuss is to become upset, to fret, to be less settled, or to get stirred up. During a fussy spell, your baby appears nervous, agitated, and unable to fall asleep or stay awake. Sometimes she appears irritableexcitable, easily upset, and unhappily sensitive to stimuli such as loud noises. She may melt down into a crying state easily if not soothed by her parents. It is not clear what is irritating, annoying, or exasperating her. This behavior may irritate a mother or father as well. Parents feel sympathy for their baby and might also feel displeasure that she requires so much attention. When extra soothing seems not to help, the baby may provoke in her parents feelings of impatience or even anger.
