Dear Parents and Educators, Welcome to Penguin Young Readers! As parents and educators, you know that each child develops at his or her own pacein terms of speech, critical thinking, and, of course, reading. Penguin Young Readers recognizes this fact. As a result, each Penguin Young Readers book is assigned a traditional easy-to-read level (14) as well as a Guided Reading Level (AP). Both of these systems will help you choose the right book for your child. Please refer to the back of each book for specific leveling information. Penguin Young Readers features esteemed authors and illustrators, stories about favorite characters, fascinating nonfiction, and more!
This book is perfect for a
Transitional Reader who:
- can read multisyllable and compound words;
- can read words with prefixes and suffixes;
- is able to identify story elements (beginning, middle, end, plot, setting, characters, problem, solution); and
- can understand different points of view.
Here are some

Chapter 1 Test Your Memory
Ring the bell! Win a prize! a woman called.
She was in a large tent at a charity fair. Cam Jansen, her friend Eric Shelton, and Cams Aunt Molly walked to the tent. Try your luck. Win a teddy bear, the woman said. Oh, no. I work for an airline, Molly told her.
Im traveling this afternoon. These bears are too big to take on an airplane. Test your memory. Win a prize! a man in another tent called out. Aunt Molly gave the man a dollar. Close your eyes, Maam, the man said.
Is my hair curly or straight? Curly, Aunt Molly answered. Im bald, the man said. What color is my shirt? Green.
Its blue. You didnt win, the man said. Molly told the man, These are Cam and Eric.
Theyre best friends. Theyre always together. Isnt that nice? Molly gave the man two more dollars. Eric didnt remember that the man wore eyeglasses. He didnt win a prize. Then Cam closed her eyes and said, Click! Whats my name? the man asked.
Your name tag says Bill. But the letters on your shirt are WG. So I think Bill is your nickname. Thats right, Bill said. My real name is William. Cams eyes were still closed.
You have a green pen and a blue pen in your shirt pocket, she told Bill. Youre wearing a watch with a leather band.
Okay! Okay! You win a prize, Bill said. Eric told Bill, Cam has a photographic memory. Its like she has a camera and pictures in her head of everything shes seen. Her real name is Jennifer, but we call her Cam.
Thats her nickname. Its short for the Camera. Cam told Bill, Click! is the sound my mental camera makes. Heres your prize, Bill said. He gave Cam a big jar of red, white, and blue popcorn. Wow! Aunt Molly said.
I love popcorn!
