Foreword
The secret to longevity is not to be found simply in the mechanistic, technological world of supplements and medications. When we do not see the total picture in our quest for immortality, we pray at the altar of modern medicine to heal us, and our quest for longevity becomes just another chapter in the frenetic pace of our modern life. We learn to take herbs, supplements, prescriptions, and vitamins. We rush for the latest and newest tests and remedies and technologies. Suffice it to say, there is a lot that modern medicine has to offer, especially in the curing realm. Our average life span has increased from 50 years to over 75 years in the last century alone. Much of that is due to advancements in science and medical care, but why are we insisting on the newest technology when, at the same time, we are obese, addicted to destructive behavior and substances, and self-destructive in so many ways?
A good life is more than just a collection of many days or years on this earth, isnt it? What most of us are really seeking is some kind of purpose, a way in which our unique contribution to the world is made manifest, a way in which to deeply connect with others and ultimately to know that we are loved and that we make a difference. And this, my friends, is the most important secret to a great life: living every day and every moment being the gift that you are (knowing that it might be your last or your loved ones last); bringing to it all of the love and commitment you can muster; and knowing that when your time here on earth has come to an end, you will have been richly satisfied with the journey. By doing this you do not lose your life, but rather, you create it.
Curing diseases and healing lives are two very separate entities. It is easier to take a pill than to change ones life. Health care practitioners need to realize the importance of self-love and self-esteem. We know from studies that those who grow up feeling unloved seek physical and emotional pleasure in drugs, alcohol, food, and behavior that puts their health and their lives at risk. This book is not about guilt, blame and shame, and what you did wrong. This book was written to help you redirect your lives physically, emotionally, and spiritually. If you have lost your health, this book can help you find it once again.
Life is a labor pain of self-creation and growth, and Dr. Max and Dr. Kay are here to be your midwives to a new life. Do you want to live to be 100? If your answer to the question is yes, read on. Our lives are stored within us. We see this when we transplant organs and memories go with them. For us to live a long and richly satisfying life, we have to focus on healing and reconnecting with parts of our bodies and our lives we may have forgotten, or perhaps never considered integral to our longevity.
We have to remember who we are, how precious we are, and how much our lives are a gift. In that reconnection, not only are we more able to give and receive love, but we are also compelled to take care of our physical bodies, as well as the earth, with more reverence.
I have said in the past that body and mind is a unit, bound together via nerve and messenger molecules. Because of this, all healing is self-induced. The new science of psychoneuroimmunology is confirming what many of us have known on a gut level all along: love, hope, joy, and peace of mind have physiological consequences, just as depression and despair do.
We need one another to heal. Loving relationships enhance our health and prolong our lives, as do optimism, hope, joy, a sense of humor, forgiveness, and gratitude. It is vital that we keep that inner child alive and cultivate a childlike sense of humor that can help us survive difficult times.
In The Complete Idiots Guide to Secrets of Longevity, Dr. Max and Dr. Kay have laid out a comprehensive and unique approach to longevity. Using their combined experience as actively practicing internal medicine physicians, they have provided a concise and clear summary of medical factors that impact longevity. They have provided guidelines to staying abreast of the latest medical care that can prolong your life. They have outlined clear recommendations for avoiding the most common diseases likely to reduce your quality of life, impact your longevity, and shorten your life span.
I highly recommend that you read this book, not only to learn what modern medicine has to offer in your quest for longevity, but more importantly, to learn how to cultivate all of the other resources available to you in your body, mind, and spirit to create a vibrant and meaningful lifea life worth living.
There is only one road to immortality and one thing of permanence, and that is love. If you live the circle of life, you will constantly rebirth yourself and, when you leave your body, your consciousness will educate those generations that follow with the gift of your love, spirit, and wisdom. This book can be your guide on that journey.

Introduction
There are two central issues that confront us as we explore the human potential to live long and healthy lives. The first is the reduction or compression of chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease. Medical science can already do this to some degree. In order to have the physical capacity and vitality to enjoy our golden years, we must take care of ourselves throughout our life span. In this book, you will discover just how to do this. With this knowledge, you will be primed to separate whats evidence-based from whats just sensational sales gimmickry.
Theres a second, more complex issue in the whole longevity field, and that is the hotly debated scientific question of how long the human life span really can be. The longest-living human on record was a French woman, Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the ripe old age of 122. Centenarians (people who have made it to 100) are one of the fastest-growing age groups in the United States. Some scientists predict that with new gene therapies and other scientific wizardry, we may even live to be 150 or older. The ongoing question will be whether in the expansion of years lived we are equally able to maintain the physical health of our organs and muscles so that those extra years are valuable to us and our loved ones. Given how much science and technology have exploded in only the past 50 years, we only hope to live long enough to witness some of the phenomenal longevity miracles we are certain are yet to be discovered.
There is no one secret to longevity. Rather, living a long and healthy life is the result of a happy marriage of many ingredients. In this book, youll discover what those ingredients are and how to incorporate them into your own life for maximum life span and health span.
We wish you joy and vibrant good health on this amazing journey we call life.
