Getting Harder

1. The first time Hosseini considered the plot to the novel was in 2007, while he was in Afghanistan on a trip for the UN Refugee Agency. It was there he was inspired by the stories about the deaths of young impoverished children and he decided to write about parents selling their children for money and how to prevent this from occurring.
2. According to Hosseini, the concept of the novel started out with an image that he simply could not shed, he said "It was the image of a man walking across the desert and he's pulling a little Radio Flyer red wagon, and in it there's a little girl about 3 years old, and there's a boy walking behind him, and these three people are walking across the desert."
3. Hosseini explained that Nila Wahdati, one of the female characters in the novel, had come from his memories of growing up in Kabul. His parents would throw parties with women who he described as "beautiful, very outspoken, temperamental, and interesting".
