Personal Introduction

My four-year old daughter was somewhat of a surprise a beautiful, wonderful surprise, but a surprise nonetheless. As I stared at the two pink lines that together served to let me know that a monumental change in my life lay ahead, I realized I had little knowledge of babies beyond the fact that they cried and pooped a lot. To put it bluntly, I was scared.

Terrified of what I might discover about stretch marks, morning sickness and weight gain, I bought Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy and began to relax a little. Its 500+ pages of no-nonsense advice and clear explanations of pregnancy and childbirth were just what I needed. It's often said that no two pregnancies are alike, so whether it's your first, second or tenth time round, this gem of a book will be of use to every expectant mother.

About Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic started as a country medical practice in Rochester, Minnesota, in the late 1800s. William Worrell Mayo and his two sons, Charles H. and William J. Mayo, collaborated with Mother Alfred Moes and the teaching order, the Sisters of Saint Francis, to open Saint Marys Hospital . The hospital remains under the umbrella of Mayo Clinic to this day.

The brothers showed a talent for innovative ideas and worked tirelessly to learn and create new surgical techniques. Their reputation in the field attracted global attention, with physicians from across the world clamoring to watch them perform surgery. The two Mayo brothers created a ripple effect when they extended an invitation to other doctors to create teams of medical experts.

Today, Mayo Clinic is one of the worlds largest not-for-profit multi-specialty medical practices and research groups. Around 50,000 physicians, nurses, scientists and support staff provide integrated and tertiary care at its three locations in Rochester, Minn., Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jacksonville, Fla., as well as a number of regional community-based practices.

Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy was published by Good Books in May 2011. It is also available for Kindle and other eBook readers from Harper Collins eBooks.
