FANTASY FOOTBALL GLOSSARY
Preface
I Love Fantasy Football. I Love Winning. And I Love Having Fun.
I used those words to start out my first book on fantasy football and they are just as true now as they were then. I hope that you already have the same passion as I do for fantasy football.
My first book, covered the draft in fantasy football, and although the draft is extremely important it does not encompass the entire season. You can lose your season at the draft but you definitely cannot win it there. In Perfect Fantasy Football I have used the same statistical methods used in my first book Perfect Draft Day Kit, and applied it to the entire season. In this book you will find insight on how to manage your team, find all the important info, how to lock in your rosters with extreme confidence, even more insight on draft strategy, and so much more.
We love the draft because we love fantasy football. A season long of enjoy sports, family and friends. The constant ribbing of long-time buddies, the thrill of victory, and even the agony of defeat. We love it as it allows us to be competitive over long distances and the ability to connect to those we care about. Remember you are playing fantasy football for fun. Get the most out of it. Smile, laugh and work hard to achieve success. It does not take hours a week, just consistency and a thoughtful plan.
I would be neglectful if I did not thank all the truly wonderful people that made this book happen. My Dad who first taught me about sports, running around in our back yard. Most importantly though, he taught me how to be passionate and keep a smile on your face in anything that I do. Thank you, Mom, for all those long nights of school work; though, the years you taught me good enough was never good enough unless it was my best. To David, my brother thanks for being my sage when it comes to fantasy football strategy. Leah, thank you for putting up with me and my brother.
To all the owners of Loads League: you guys make fantasy football fun. You were my first fantasy league and you are still my favorite. A special thanks to Commissioner Chuck for running that league, hosting too many drafts, and asking me to be in the league in the first place. AJ thanks for being my first supporter when any book comes out.
Thanks to my family for allowing me to watch countless hours of football aka Work. Becky, I do love you more than football. Mainly because I found out saying the opposite was a poor decision. Lili, you will forever be the greatest thing that ever happened to me. To Jackson, I cannot wait to share the same joy with you that I have had when I watched and played football. To all my family, thanks for keeping me company on so many Sundays.
Thank you for all the educators in my life. I did not make life easy on you. I was a class clown and was pretty far from making the honor roll any quarter. You sparked a joy inside me, in bettering myself through knowledge. Many of you saw the potential that I did not care to see myself. Mr. Starkey, Mrs. Hanson, Mr. Cunningham, Mrs. Cunningham, Mrs. Sites, Mrs. Osborne(both of you), Mr. Cook, Mr. Zacharias, Mrs. Merrilees, Dr. Berdanard, Dr. Smalley, and Dr. Ward thank you for teaching me so much.
If you enjoy this book, I would only ask one thing, please pass on the great tips. Obviously not to the other owners in your league. You need to beat them next year too. One last thing, if you could go to wherever you purchased this book, and please leave a review it really helps.
Chapter 1
Overall Strategy
Score more points than your opponent. If you score more points than your opponent, you will win. If you win, you will be happy. This might seem just a little oversimplified, and it is. Every word in all of the following chapters is going to help you do just this. None of us are playing in fantasy football leagues for a career, that is what Draft Kings is for. We play to brag to our friends, we play to make football more interesting to watch, and we play because there is nothing quite as awesome as winning. To sum the overall strategy in just three words:
Score
Win
Enjoy
Maximize your Score with Starters
The easiest way to score more points than your opponent is to score more points with your starting players than the opponent scores with their starting players. This too will go into the Duh category of advice, but many fantasy football owners do all kinds of fancy things to not follow this advice. Often owners make decisions that will only benefit their benches and not their startable players.
I myself fell into this trap, when I was just a wee lad playing fantasy football. Every Tuesday morning I would put in waiver claims for the latest marginal wide receiver in a mid-tier offense that got the most touchdowns the week before. Only to be inevitably disappointed the next week. That is when that player, while on my bench, got 2 receptions for 25 yards. They would never become a startable fantasy asset, and only be wavier claim fodder.
What I should have been asking myself was did anything change on that team, that makes this guy's value any different this week than the week before. It would be great if they had a QB change, if it was a rookie learning a new offense, or if there was an injury on that team. Then great, something changed, the value of that player is higher, and it could mean a higher production value going forward. If nothing had changed, the football gods smiled on this particular wide receiver, the offensive coordinator saw something he liked on film, or something that applied it to just that one week. There was no reason to pick up this player.
