Chapter 2 Protecting the Body

Introduction

H ydrogen peroxide is a chemical that has a formula of HOOH. It is a popular chemical substance used in many medical and industrial applications yet a few healing experts sense it has much more uses for us than simply being a disinfectant.

What we have here is a substance that cleans, bleaches, removes stains, disinfects, sanitizes, freshens, and is perfect for use anywhere, anytime. Furthermore, it doesn't cost a lot, is available everywhere, and is very environment-friendly. Let's get to understanding it better.

Chapter 1 Understanding Hydrogen Peroxide

In chemistry, hydrogen peroxide is a compound represented by the formula H2O2. It takes the form of a colorless liquid that is thicker than the normal consistency of water. Based on its molecular structure, this compound is made up of only hydrogen and oxygen molecules or alternatively, water and oxygen.

It is a part of the peroxide group (also called peroxo group) that includes chemical compounds with the oxygen-oxygen (O - O) single bond in their molecular formulas. In fact, it is actually the most basic peroxide that is stable. In large quantities, the O O chemical bond is pretty unstable to the point where they can effortlessly split into highly reactive radicals (atoms or molecules that has an open electron shell because of unpaired valence electrons) that may poison organisms and even cause cell damage that leads to diseases such as cancer and stroke. This event is possible by hemolytic fission, also known as hemolytic cleavage or hemolysis. As such, not much quantities of this compound are found in the environment.

However, in small amounts hydrogen peroxide is regarded as a highly effective disinfectant and antiseptic. Because of the presence of oxygen molecules, it oxidizes microorganisms that causes infections and thus, making it a trustworthy natural sanitizer. Since it is a very powerful oxidizer, the compound is also used as a bleaching agent thats why it has many uses in our everyday lives. For example, it is used for manufacturing detergents that we use to clean laundry and other equipment, purify water and bleach paper, pulp and textiles.

It really is a wonder molecule. For example, the cells in our body called granulocytes that fight infection from unwanted home breakers, actually produce hydrogen peroxide as its first line on defense against the army of the invading microorganisms (yeast, bacteria, viruses and parasites). Hydrogen Peroxide also works on the metabolism processes of carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals.

In fact, the demand for hydrogen peroxide is so high that the worlds annual production of this good goes up to an average of 3.8 million tonnes. The commercialized good normally is an aqueous solution containing 3 percent of hydrogen peroxide and other chemicals is typically added in the solution. Although, for more complicated production processes and purpose, hydrogen peroxide can also be purchased in pure quality.

Contained in the latter chapters are different uses of this compound, most specifically, in terms of their health benefits. Not many people know how helpful hydrogen peroxide is and how much it can do to their overall well being.

Types of Hydrogen Peroxide Available

One can purchase different grades of hydrogen peroxide solutions. Different grades mean different purposes.

1. 3 Percent Pharmaceutical Grade This is typically what you use for cleaning wounds and minor injuries as well as using it as a disinfectant. It is available in local pharmacies or drug stores. This concentration of hydrogen peroxide is oftentimes impure with the addition of stabilizers such as phenol and sodium stannate. It is not recommended to use this internally, id est. ingesting the solution.
2. 6 Percent Beautician Grade Typically used in salons or beauty shops as a hair colorant. Again, it is impure and should not be used internally.
3. 30 Percent Reagent Grade This is the concentration used for different types of scientific experimentations. It also contains stabilizers.
4. 30 to 32 Percent Electronic Grade For cleaning electronic parts and equipment
5. 35 Percent Technical Grade Stronger version of the reagent grade because of higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. Besides that, the only difference is the use of phosphorous to aid the neutralization of chlorine from the water that is used to dilute the solution.
