Indonesian Games and Activities to Try Apel, Mangga Apple, Mango To prepare: The children/students sit in a circle. The adult/teacher writes on the board, in Indonesian only, words relating to one category of words (for example, My Day or Opposites). To play: Using a fake (wooden or plastic) apple or tropical fruit, toss the fruit to a student and say an Indonesian word as you pass. The student has to say the meaning of the word in English; then he or she throws the fruit to another student and says a different Indonesian word. If the student who receives the fruit cannot say the meaning, he is out and moves back from the circle.

Students may need a few moments to remember the meanings but will get quicker as the game progresses! The game continues until you have a winnerthe last player left.

Apa Itu? Whats That? This is played like the game Battleship. To prepare: Ask the children/students to choose eight words in Indonesian relating to a theme (for example, At My House). Write these on the board. Students each draw a grid, 5 squares by 5 squares. They then number from 1 to 5 along the left side of their grid, and from 6 to 10 along the top side.

Next, students draw or write the name of three of the chosen items (using the words written on the board as a reminder) into three squares of their grid. To play: The adult/teacher calls out a grid reference in Indonesian, for example, Dua, delapan (Two, eight), and students cross that square off their grid. The winner is the person with no objects crossed off after eight grid references have been called out.

Saya Ke Pasar... I Went to the Market To prepare: Players sit in a circle. (I went to the market and bought bananas.) This leads to lots of fun as students are encouraged to remember the nouns theyve learned in Indonesian. The winner is the person who can manage to remember and repeat the list without making a single mistake. You can also play this game to practice other vocabulary groups; try playing Waktu nenek saya berlibur, di dalam kopor ada (When my grandma went on holiday, in her suitcase she had) When children/students are first learning a new set of words, it can be helpful to hold up one of the flash cards as a prompt, with just the illustration visible (cover the words with your hand or paper).

Konsentrasi Card Memory Game This game not only involves knowing the meaning of words but also involves some concentration and memory! This can be played in pairs or as a group activity. To prepare: The children create a set of card pairs based on the categories of flash card words being practiced: The Indonesian word is written on one card, and a picture of that item appears on a matching card. The picture can be drawn, or children can stick pictures from magazines onto the cards.

To play: As a pair activity, students place the cards face down on a table (use at least 12 matching cards). The first student turns over two cards. If they turn over a matching pair, they keep the pair. If they do not turn over a pair they turn the cards back over. The next student turns over a card and has to try and remember if any previous cards matched this new one... and thus make a guess before turning over the second card.

Each time a student plays they turn the cards back over. As a small group activity, the students place the illustration cards face down on the floor at random and sit around these. The teacher holds up the flash card from the set (with illustration covered) or one of the written cards, and asks a student to turn over one of the homemade cards. If the card matches, the student gains that set as a pair. If not, the card is then turned back over before the next child has a turn.
