Kids Guideto Dog Care
When you first get a dog there is so much tobe excited about! They are cute and warm and fun to play with, butthere is more to having a dog than just having fun.
In order for your dog to grow up and be happyand healthy, there are a few things you will have to do. Some ofthem you will do every day and some of them you will do every sooften, but all of them are important for your dog.
The first thing you must do when you get adog is to pick out a great name for him. It should express who heis. Something like a color or a food is common. You can also thinkof a name that is really creative and sums up your dog in one word. There may be a special mark that only your dog has, like a spot ora certain kind of coloring. These could be used to help you nameyour dog.
Your dogs name can also be a human name likeEmma or Scotty. This decision is important and should be made as afamily, but maybe you will have the best idea!
One of the most important things you can dofor your dog is to remember to feed him every day. Depending on theschedule your family has decided on, you might need to feed yourdog once a day, twice a day, or whenever the bowl is empty.
If you have a puppy, there is a special typeof food you will need. You might also need special food if your dogis really old. Just like when people are babies, they eat baby foodto help them grow up big and strong. And when you get older youneed different kinds of food to keep your body healthy. Dogs arejust like people when it comes to changing food with age. It isvery important that you do not feed your dog people food. It makestheir tummies upset and can be very dangerous to them.
In addition to feeding your dog every day, itis very important to make sure your dog has enough water to drink.Dogs get thirsty just like we do. It is your job to make sure thereis water in their bowls. It is hard for your dog to tell you whenit is thirsty, so you have to pay attention and check his bowls forfood and water several times a day.
If your dog isn't potty trained he might endup going potty inside the house. When your dog goes to potty insideyou're gonna have to clean up the mess and that won't be fun. Whenyou were growing up and learning to go potty by yourself yourparents had to train you. Now it's your turn to train your dog. This may sound messy but it can be a lot of fun.
After dogs eat they usually have to go pottysoon after. Taking them for walks after they eat will get them usedto going potty outside. If you catch your dog going potty on yourfloor or anywhere inside the house, make sure you or your parentstell the dog "NO!" in a voice so that the dog knows going pottyinside is bad.
Watch your dog and if it looks like he wantto go outside it's because he wants to go potty. After a few daysyour dog should get used to going potty outside. Give your dogtreats when he gets back from going potty outside so he knows thisis what they should be doing.
You need to brush your teeth every day andjust like you, your dog needs their teeth brushed everyday too. Youcan get a special toothbrush for your dog that will be smaller thanthe one you are used to. And just like you they will need toothpaste. Make sure that this toothpaste is special toothpaste that'smade just for dogs.
Your dog might not like having their teethbrushed at first so when you're brushing the dog's teeth make sureyou tell them they are doing a good job when they sit still. Youmight have to hold them while you brush. After you're done brushingtheir teeth give them a treat as a reward for sitting still.
