Unlike plan es, helicop ters can hover. This means they do n ot need long runways to land and t ake off. They are used for m any jobs such as farming, responding to emergencies, and reporting the news. This small Hughes helicopter i s spraying crops. It has room for two people and is o ften used to train helicopt er pilot s.

Chinook This large helicopter has two sets of m ain rotors. The y rotate in d ifferent di rections f rom each other.
This stops the helicopter from twisting aro und just as t he tail rotor d oes on a single rotor h elicopter. The Chinook h as two powerful turboshaft engines a t the back. These supply the power to t he back and front rotors. The Chinook i s a heavy-lift helicopter. I t is mainly used for carrying t roops, a rtillery g uns, and suppli es to the battlefie ld.

It i s carrying machine guns, rockets, cannons, and missiles. These are fired by t he weapons officer i n the front cockpit. The pilot s its behind in a se parate cockp it. The gunship i s also heavily armored. The fuselage, cockpit, and rotor h ead can withstand bein g hit by small cannon f ire. This Mil Mi-24 is o ften calle d the flying t ank by its Russian pilots.
It carries eight combat troops i n the cabin b ehind the cockpits.
