Useful Rulers

You likely use rulers in school.

You might use one to make straight lines. Rulers also help us

measure how long or tall objects

are or how far away from each

other they are. Lets learn about these super science tools!

Units of Measurement

Many rulers have units of measurement on both edges.

One edge shows inches. This unit is used mainly in the United States.

The other edge shows centimeters and millimeters. These units belong to the metric system . Many countries use the metric system.

Ruler Practice

Lets try measuring with inches. Line up one end of an object with the line at the end of the ruler. Without moving the ruler, look at where the other end of the object lines up with the ruler. Thats its length!

The object or length you want to measure may not reach a whole number. So you need to use a fraction . Ruler marks between whole numbers help you. For example, an object that reaches halfway between and inches is inches long.

The numbers on the metric side of the ruler show centimeters. Each mark between centimeters stands for millimeter. Ten millimeters equal centimeter. This toy is centimeters. Thats the same as millimeters. Scientists often use metric units.

More Measuring Tools

Rulers arent the only measuring tools. A yardstick is a flat ruler thats yard long. Thats the same as feet (0.9m). A measuring tape can be really long! Its good for measuring around objects, too.

A caliper is a measuring tool with two moving legs and a ruler.

The legs fit around the width of an object. Then, the measurement can be read on the ruler. Many kinds of scientists use calipers.
