Follow the Pattern

Our weather follows a pattern. It gets warmer in certain months and colder in others. Each year follows the same pattern. The cycle of seasons shows why this happens.

A season is a period of time when a certain kind of weather happens. In many places on Earth, there are four very different seasons. They are spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Changing Weather

Many different things affect the weather. Where you are on Earth affects how warm or cold it is. It can also affect how many seasons a place has. Different places have different climates.

The weather is hottest near the equator. The Earth is a bit wider at the equator, so this land is closer to the sun. Because it gets more direct rays from the sun, it is hotter there! How direct your sunlight is determines much of your weather.

On an Axis

Earth doesnt just sit still in space. It rotates, or spins, on its axis, which leans a bit. The part of Earth that faces the sun has day, while the side facing away has night.

A Year

Earth revolves around the sun while spinning on its axis. It makes one complete revolution about every days. This trip around the sun gives us our year! It also gives us our seasons.

Places near the poles are always cold, while places near the equator are always warm. Many parts in between see all four seasons. Which season happens where depends on which hemisphere you are in. The Northern and Southern Hemispheres have opposite seasons.

Its summer when a hemisphere is pointed toward the sun. Winter happens when Earth is on the opposite side of the sun, and the hemisphere is facing the other way. When the Northern Hemisphere has summer, the Southern Hemisphere has winter.
